NASCAR VETERAN BOBBY HAMILTON SR. SUCCUMBS TO CANCER: 2004 Truck Series champion and a four-time Cup Series winner Bobby Hamilton has passed away at age 49 from head and neck cancer. Hamilton drove in the first three Truck Series races in 2006, the last being a 14th place finish at Atlanta Motor Speeday, before announcing his illness and turning over the team's driving duties to son Bobby Hamilton Jr.. The elder Hamilton broke into NASCAR in an unusual way as he was utilized in the 1990 movie Days of Thunder. Bobby's big break came in 1995 when he was hired by Petty Enterprises to drive the #43 STP car. Hamilton would record 10-top ten finishes that season. Hamilton's final Cup win came at Talladega in 2001.PETRINO BOLTS THE 'VILLE FOR NFL: Louisville's coach departs while the GMAC Bowl is being played, sound familiar(John L. Smith)?? Falcons hire Petrino for 5 years/$24 million. BOWL PICKS RED-HOT!!!If you thought my regular season college picks were good, over even my pro picks the last few weeks, then check out my 9-1 record in the 10 most recent bowl games played. I have my biggest lock of the bowl season on tap for New Year's Eve, not to mention New Year's Day and all the BCS plays. Get the rest of my picks for the bowl season here.FAVRE KEEPS ECONOMIC HORSEPOWER HUMMING: 2006 Harris Poll ranks Favre as the nation's favorite football player, and third among all sports figures, behind Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan. Favre also ranked first among NFL players in Sports 'Q Score', a prominent survey conducted for marketing and advertising purposes. Also, local TV ratings for Packers games improved from 31 in 1992 to 48 during the 1997 season. Even this past season, games averaged a solid 36 rating. JAVON WALKER GRIEVES: Teammates are concerned for the grief-stricken Walker, who was not among the 2,700 who attended memorial services for Darrent Williams in Texas over the weekend. There is even speculation that Walker may not return to the Broncos in 2007. TRAGEDY - USC KICKER FOUND DEAD: Junior USC kicker Mario Danelo was found dead by a passer-by late Saturday afternoon about 120 feet down a rocky cliff near Point Fermin lighthouse in San Pedro. Danelo, the 21-year-old son of long-time NFL kicker Joe Danelo, was 15-16 on field goals this past season and just last Monday kicked two field goals in the Trojans 32-18 Rose Bowl win over the University of Michigan. UPDATE - FOUL PLAY ALL BUT RULED OUT: Statement from the police department points towards either an accident or suicide. Investigators were looking into whether Mario Danelo was out with friends Friday night. It's said that Danelo was last scene around midnight. The police spokesman adds that a 'handful of people' have fallen off the cliff over the years, the area is marked with warning signs. Meanwhile brother Joey Danelo called the tragedy 'an unfortunate accident' adding that Mario was a good kid and that there was not a person he that didn't like him.ROMO'S WORLD COMES CRASHING DOWN: Don't think Cowboys quarterback will be scoring any big dates this off-season - in what will go down as one of the biggest blunders in NFL history, Tony Romo drops snap on a hold of what would had been a game-winning 19-yard field goal. NFL SECOND ROUND PLAYOFF SCHEDULE: Indianapolis at Baltimore (4:30 PM ET 1/13) Philadelphia at New Orleans (8 PM ET 1/13) Seattle at Chicago (1 PM ET 1/14, forecast temperatures: mid 20's) New England at San Diego (4:30 PM ET 1/14)BORIS SAID WINS NASCAR BOBSLED RACE: What?? They actually were able to contest a bobsled race in global warming out east??? I'm guessing the sleds had water skis under them instead of runners. NASCAR LEGEND BACK IN HOSPITAL: 1973 NASCAR champion and current TV/Radio commentator Benny Parsons is in a intensive care unit and has been hospitalized for the last two weeks due to complications stemming from his lung cancer. Parsons was diagnosed with cancer in his left lung in July but declared three months later that he had beaten it. The most recent report has Parsons with blood clots in his right (good) lung. It was also said recently that Parsons had been utilizing a oxygen tank due to diminished lung capacity. 1,100 LB HOG BAGGED IN A-T-L!?!? A giant wild hog boasted to be bigger than the near-mythical "Hogzilla" caught in southern Georgia a few years ago has been killed in a suburban Atlanta neighborhood. The hog hung snout down from a tree Friday a hunter's front yard, not far from where the beast was shot. The hunter said he hauled it to a truck weight station, which recorded the hairy hog at a whopping 1,100 pounds. News of the kill got hunters talking about other enormous beasts that roam the state. LAMPS WON'T BE GUESTHOSTING ROME ANYTIME SOON... Before knowing any of the details on his show yesterday, Rome sounded ready to throw his frequent guest host under the bus, saying that he hopes the charges against Lampley are not true, but 'it's not looking good'. Rome adds that even if he's found innocent, that it would be hard for Lampley 'to unring that bell' or to put the domestic violence toothpaste back into the tube. In other words, guilty until proven innocent, and then still guilty. If you think that is something, then just wait until today as the details are now out. The case involves a 28-year old named Candice Sanders, who is a former Miss California USA. According to court records, Sanders filed a restraining order that Lampley attacked her in her apartment on New Year's Eve. In the complaint Sanders said 'I received injuries to my head, neck and back from his throwing me against the walls and door' Sanders also alleged that Lampley had been drinking and smoking marijuana before attacking her, and that Lampley threw her to the floor at a New York restaurant two months ago. As you might imagine, Lampley came out swinging defending himself in a statment (through a spokesperson) saying 'I am innocent of the charge of domestic abuse that has been leveled against me and will vigorously defend myself. I have tremendous respect for the justice system as a whole and for the San Diego courts and district attorney's office specifically. I'm confident that the process will prove that I'm not guilty of this charge. I thank my friends and family for their support during this difficult time, and ask for the understanding and patience from the media until my legal situation allows me to discuss this in more depth.' Among those in Lampley's corner is his first wife, a journalism professor at the University of Kansas who still considers Lampley a good friend - she says Lampley is 'not capable of striking a woman' and that she never saw him 'strike a pillow'.![]() BOXING COMMENTATOR FACES DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RAP: Friends of the Jim Rome radio program continue to drop like flies in the blotter arena. 'Pre-eminent' boxing announcer and Huffington Post blogger Jim Lampley has been arrested in San Diego for investigation of domestic violence. Lampley, 57, also was booked for investigation of violating a restraining order and dissuading a witness. No other details were available, but bail was set at a hefty $35,000. Just wondering how the scorecards of the 12 jurors would look if this ever goes to trial, or the judge just might tamper with the verdict like the 2004 presidential election in Ohio. Lampley's television career has now gone over 30 years, and is also known as a pioneer of sorts as he was one of ABC's first sideline reporters for college football, before television networks decided that women might be a better fit for that gig. Meanwhile, KACSPORTS has to ask the question...Lampley and Vince McMahon, separated at birth??? HAS BRADY QUINN'S STOCK PLUMMETED: Maybe he just wanted to make sure that he didn't end up with the Raiders, or even worse, Lions. But Brady Quinn is outdone big time by LSU's JaMarcus Russell in 41-14 blowout loss. JUDGE WANTS TO THROW THE BOOK AT TYSON: Arizona Judge says he's had enough of the boxing champ turned luchador Mike Tyson, says he's had enough 'second chances' (try 20th chance), and wants to send him back to prison. Tyson was charged with two felonies for drug possession as well as two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of drugs. If convicted of all four charges, Tyson could be sentenced to between 2 1/4 and 7 1/2 years. Meanwhile, it might be a good idea NOT to commit a felony in Arizona right now. I wouldn't want to risk being in the same cell block as Tyson AND Albert Belle. I might opt to take my chances with Christopher Scarver instead.PACKER NATION BELIEVES FAVRE WILL HANG IT UP: And this is a Milwaukee-based JSonline poll, mind you. A shocking 81 percent believe #4 will call it quits. That is like pocket kings v. pocket aces pre-flop. BAMA-BOUND SABAN A 'WEASEL': Kind of like Bobby 'the Weasel' Heenan??? Former Dolphins coach is getting absolutely lit into down in South Florida. Take the first two paragraphs of Dan Le Betard's story on the defection: 'You know what (Saban) was as Dolphins coach? A failure. A loser. A gasbag. And one of the worst investments Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga has ever made. He was less of a success than Dave Wannstedt and more of a traitor than Ricky Williams. There has been very little in franchise history that came with more expectations and fewer results than this hypocrite who at the end avoided the hard questions one last time. Talk like a warrior. Behave like a weasel.' Le Betard then notes that if someone could leave a last place team for $35-$40 million then what does that make Pete Carroll and Jim Tressel worth. I'm guessing Brett Bielema might be worth $50 million by the end of the week. And if you think that column was bad just imagine how he gets lit up in Bama if he leaves Tuscaloosa as a failure a few years down the road. And what does Ricky Williams do now??? And Dante Culpepper??? If Dante was skipping team meetings it really wouldn't matter now. REPLACEMENTS??? Now it's Huizenga's turn to possibly bribe someone with a boatload of cash, With Bob Stoops, Bobby Petrino, and Kirk Ferentz just a few or the college names already mentioned. You might as well throw Carroll's name into the mix as well so he can lose to the Patriots and Jets. Jim Mora is also mentioned as a candidate, I don't think he is on Huizenga's speed-dial.TANK JOHNSON'S WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION... What the hell was the Bears defensive tackle trying to do - stockpiling a military buildup for a shock-and-awe attack on Wisconsin??? Police seized approximately 550 rounds of ammunition during the raid on Johnson's Gurnee home last month, according to new court documents. Ammo was found in Johnson's kitchen, basement, garage and bedroom. Police also found six guns, marijuana and unlabeled pills believed to be prescription painkillers, according to search warrant documents. Tank was charged with six counts of possession of a firearm without a gun-owner identification card. Authorities said they found a semiautomatic rifle with 19 live rounds, as well as two rifles and two handguns as well as a loaded .45-caliber handgun under a leather chair. The real scary thing is if Tank ever were to get Alonzo Spellman as an accomplice, then we just might see an invasion of Kenosha. ROLLIE FINGERS OWES $1.4 MILLION IN WISCONSIN??? Or let's just say the Wisconsin Department says someone with a listed Las Vegas address named Rollie Fingers owes $1.4 million, and his birthdate matches that of the Baseball Hall of Famer. The amount marks the seventh highest total in the state and was first reported in a Milwaukee-based blog last month. A revenue department spokesperson would not confirm that it is indeed the ex-Milwaukee Brewer. ![]() DARRENT DIED IN JAVON WALKER'S ARMS If the reports coming out from the NFL Network's Adam Shefter are accurate, the circumstances of the incident that claimed the life of Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams become even more disturbing if that's possible. According to Shefter's report (which he stops just short of confirming), Darrent likely died in the arms of teammate Javon Walker. Initially, authorities thought that Walker had also been shot, because he had a substansial amount of blood on his clothes which turned out to be from Darrent. Also, more names from the Denver Nuggets are surfacing in relation to the incident, it is said the players were at Carmelo Anthony's party and was on it's way to Allen Iverson's party (guess he's already making an impact on his new community). A Carmelo Anthony party followed by dropping in on an A.I. party, I would not confuse those gatherings with ice cream socials. It must also be noted that Javon Walker had a critical dropped pass in overtime in the Broncos' season-ending loss earlier in the day. Was that possibly a 'spark' - one thing we know is that there are plenty of witnesses and much more to come. NUGGETS PLAYER RETURNS: How's this for an irony. Julius Hodge survived being shot four times in the lower body after leaving a Denver club last April. Last night Hodge made his first appearance for the Nuggets since that night. |
