FORMER NFL STAR LAYS DOWN, NOT GOOD NEWS FOR BONDS: Turns out not even the football players in the Bay Area were free from BALCO. Former 49ers lineman Dana Stubblefield has pleaded guilty to lying to investigators in the BALCO case, making him the first football player charged in the long-running investigation. At worst Stubblefield faces six months in prison, although he could also escape with no time. The bad news is that the IRS investigator is the same one who recently brought down Marion Jones and also got McNamee as a witness against Roger Clemens - and also has Barry Bonds in his crosshairs.

NEGATIVE FOUR: Favre OT interception ends Green Bay's season.

CURRENT TEMPS: 8:15 ET, 1/20/08: Moscow 31, Tromso, Norway 30, McMurdo, Antarctica 33, Manila PI 81, Green Bay -3. OK, so the Eastern Hemisphere now has the mild air mass we've had for the last month, Tromso has the gulfstream working for them, and McMurdo is in the dog days of summer. Manila's fine if you can deal with a typhoon every other week. So what exactly is the point here???

ICE BOWL II

Sunday's NFC title game figures to be the third coldest playoff game in NFL history, the current coldest three are the original Ice Bowl (-13/-49 wind chill), the 1981 Chargers/Bengals 'Freezer Bowl' (-9/-59) and a 1993 Raiders/Bills Divisional Playoff (0/-32). The second coldest home game in Packers history was also in 1993, with the Raiders the opposition in that as well. Green Bay won that one 28-0, finishing off that defensive masterpiece with a LeRoy Butler defensive score. Desperately seeking warmth (I guess), Butler jumped into the bundled up patrons after scoring, and by absolute accident invented the Lambeau Leap.

UPDATE - EVEN LOWER TEMPS FORECASTED: Predicted Saturday night low for Green Bay is now -14 (wind chill -35), the forecasted Sunday high has been lowered from six to three above, and Sunday night's low is now predicted to be -8. A Milwaukee TV station predicts the game-time temperature will be an even zero, dropping to -2 by the second half.

GRAVEYARD SHIFT SPECIAL DOWN UNDER: The only sports event I remember going later into the following morning would be the second game of a rain-delayed Padres-Phillies doubleheader some years back. Thnks to a couple of five-set epics that both went 4½+ hours each, Saturday nights scheduled play at the Australian Open does not end until 4:35 AM local time Sunday morning (12:35 PM Saturday U.S. East Coast time). When the first five-setter went into the scheduled evening schedule, an offer was made to Venus Williams to move her match (which she eventually won in straight sets) to the #2 arena, but she declined. Approximately only 5,000 remained in the 15,000 arena when match point was finally served, but it was a very raucous gathering who stayed to see Australia's Lleyton Hewitt emerge victorious.

CHECKMATE - REAPER GETS BOBBY FISCHER: Remembered mostly for beating the Soviet Union's Boris Spassky in 1972 then again in 1992, before playing chess with the U.S. Government amongst others in later years, Bobby Fischer has died in Iceland due to an undisclosed illness according to his spokesman. It was the 1992 match against Spassky that caught the attention of U.S. authorities, which was played in war-torn Yugoslavia which was facing U.N. sanctions at the time. In recent years, Fischer emerged in occasional interviews going into Anti-Sematic rants and praising the 9/11 attacks on America. In July 2004, Fischer was arrested in Japan and threatened with extradition to the U.S. before the issue was resolved with Fischer gaining citizenship to Iceland, where he scored his original victory over Spassky.

FAN MOVES FROM AUSTRALIA TO ROOT FOR PACK: Salesman talks his wife into packing up along with the two kids, and move to Green Bay. Says he likes it, at least the cost of living’s low. Actually, every day I see that tennis tournament Melbourne sounds good to me right about now, cloudless sky, sun beating down on the players, matches postponed to excessive heat – nice problems to have.

NFL PLANNING ANOTHER GAME IN BRITAIN: But this time it most likely won’t be at Wembley Stadium. You see, three weeks after this year’s Giants/Dolphins game England had a critical soccer match v. Croatia in the final game of Euro 2008 qualifying. Because Wayne Rooney and company are way too pampered to perform on a Heinz Field-like playing surface, England ended up losing that game and thus missed the tournament. This time, the NFL is reportedly considering Millennium Stadium in Wales, which has the advantages of (1) a retractable roof and more importantly (2) bars with ‘joy machines’ capable of pouring up to 12 pints in 20 seconds. It is said that 77,000 pints were once consumed by 63,000 fans (hopefully excluding minors) during one rugby match at the venue. So what. Unless we’re talking about Brett Favre throwing a TD pass at Old Trafford, the Theatre of Dreams on Sir Matt Busby Way it’s not a big deal. And incidentally, the Packers are scheduled to play in Tampa (Malcolm Glazer own both Manchester United and the Buccaneers) next year – make it happen NFL!!!

CHICKEN AND SAUSAGE ON MASCOT RANKING MENU: Market research group ranks Phillie Phanatic as top sports mascot – followed by the Famous (San Diego) Chicken, Mr. Met, the Brewers Racing Sausages, Benny the Bull (NBA), and the Anaheim Rally Monkey (not even a mascot). Also ranked is the Atlanta Braves ‘Rally’, don’t know why he gets the nod over several other Elmo-like mascots used by MLB teams. Three NFL mascots round out the top-ten, the 49ers ‘Sourdough Sam’, the Cowboys ‘Rowdy’, and the Broncos ‘Miles’. None of those do much for me, they are watered-down caricatures that seemed to be commissioned more by the league than by the specific franchises.

GOLFWEEK COVER RESPARKS TILGHMAN ISSUE: Things were going as well as possible for Kelly Tilghman after accepting a two week suspension from the Golf Channel for her on-air slip-up. That is, until a publication called Golfweek ran this nice little cover story which will be on newstands well after Brett Favre's SI cover sells out. Golfweek's editor says they ran the cover and story to bring forth 'intelligent dialogue' on the issue. About all they did was start the brushfire all over again, I'm sure Al Sharpton is planning his response as I speak, and I can't really blame him. Meanwhile PGA commish Tim Finchem is among the unhappy, labeling the piece as 'tabloid journalism'

UPDATE - EDITOR OUT: Guess you can say he gave himself just enough rope to hang himself, one report said the Tour had threatened to pull $50,000 worth of advertising if heads didn't roll.

THE DARK SIDE OF PACKER FANS: Two incidents which occurred during last Saturday's playoff game are making national news. First a 36-year old man wound up in jail this week after taping his seven year-old son to a wall and also taping a Packer jersey on him. All this because the kid supposedly refused to root for the team. The Mrs. recorded all of it on her camera phone. The dad pleaded no contest and paid a $186 fine while his wife got a restraining order. That one you could possibly laugh at but not this one - a Florida bar owner who paints his tavern in Packers colors fights with a patron/friend, and hits him over the head with a bottle. That man needed 13 stitches, then called his 17-year old daughter from the ER. The daughter, along with four others, then went to the bar owners home to exact revenge, beating the man (wearing his Packers jersey) to death.

COULD MIGUEL TEJADA LOSE GREEN CARD??? It is safe to say that Tejada has not had the best of weeks. First Congress asked for a probe to see if Tejada lied in regards to the Rafael Palmeiro case back in 2005. Now comes word that the investigation could possibly affect Tejada's immigration status, which could set quite a precedent with other Latin ballplayers who run afoul of PED's. The story points out that Tejada could be denied access back into the country merely for admitting to a crime in which he is being investigated. Also, Tejada's brother died in a car wreck this week, so safe to say it is officially a bad week. Incidentally, the Houston Astros say they have no regrets over trading for Tejada earlier in the off-season, I say that's one GM who should be fired right now, who didn't see THIS coming???

RANDY MOSS HIT W/RESTRAINING ORDER: Florida radio station first reported this last night, then pulled the story from the stations web site, leading to speculation that the man in question may had been someone who just happened to have the same name. Now the Moss 'dating violence' story is back up, along with a copy of the restraining order - 6'4" 210 lbs, born 2/13/1977. Sounds like a positive ID to me - it should also be noted that Moss is married. Earlier this morning, Moss told reporters not to rush to judgemnet, saying 'It was an accident where she hurt herself, to where they called me, called my attorneys, trying to get X amount of dollars out of me, and if we don’t get X amount of dollars they were going to go to the press before this game'.

PP&K WINNER TO BE HONORED IN FOXBORO: In case you missed it, a 14-year old contestant from New Hampshire who won her age group at the finals of the Punt, Pass, and Kick competition (BTW, wish they would go back to televising that, you'd think the NFL Network would do that) draws some moderate heat from the Indianapolis crowd because she was wearing the New England Patriots colors. I think she will survive, in fact it seemed she took it quite well and even said afterwards that she knew she was going to get some razzing - and besides getting booed is actually a good thing, it means people care. Meanwhile the other PP&K winners got little reaction, including a contestant from Hawaii representing the San Diego Chargers (that was who the Colts were playing, wasn't it???). Nonetheless, the Patriots PR staff have the youth's back, and have invited her to the coin toss before Sunday's AFC Championship. It'll be like the Premiere League, she can march right out there with the team. Wait a minute - just realized, it was the RCA Dome - the booing was PIPED IN!!!!!

FAVRE MAKES ANOTHER SI COVER: SI sees a good moneymaker when they see one, in case you missed it last months 'Sportsmen of the Year' cover became SI's biggest selling issue since the Dale Earnhardt tragedy in February 2001, so you might want to snatch this off your local newsstand shelves...

IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING: Not much change in the Sunday GB weather forecast, except they now added in flurries - expected high is still listed at four degrees.

EIGHT PERCENT OF BASEBALL CLAIMS NEED FOR ADD DRUGS!?!? That would be attention deficit disorder. The statistics cited at Tuesday's congressional hearing on doping in baseball showed soaring 'therapeutic use exemptions' by players claiming the need to use ADD and ADHD drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall to supplant their apparent need for amphetamines. The hearing disclosed that such requests soared from 28 to 103 in just the last year, meaning that over eight percent of MLB's rank and file received permission to use ADD/ADHD drugs.

MORE TROUBLE FOR PACMAN JONES: Unfortunately, I think we got the right Adam Jones here - the one always hanging out at the A-T-L strip clubs. A woman is seeking an arrest warrant against the suspended cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones, claiming she was punched by the would-be NFL star.

FILES SHREDDED FROM WVU FOOTBALL OFFICES??? The fallout from carpetbagger Rich Rodriguez's acrimonious departure as West Virginia football takes a new twist when the school confirmed it has launched an investigation into the disappearance of files from the school's football offices. A West Virginia paper reported after that the football staff found that most files that had been stored in Rodriguez's private office were missing upon the team's return from the Fiesta Bowl. The newspaper also reported witnesses in the football building seeing Rodriguez and a video coordinator shredding paperwork the day he returned to clean out his office. Rodriguez's agent denies the allegations, saying that the university should have backup copies of the seven years worth of player files (including summer camp attendence, boosters, recruiting, academic records, community service, disciplinary results and even contact information) in question. WVU is already trying to recoup $4 million from a buyout clause that the university claimed was in Rodriguez's contract.

DALLAS LOSES: Now for the Green Bay forecast for next Sunday, and remember - the game doesn't start until 5:40 PM...

Four degrees for a Conference Championship game in Green Bay - anyone believe in karma???

EMOTIONAL TERRELL OWENS POST-GAME PRESSER: His voice choking with emotion, T.O. addresses the inevitable questions about Tony Romo - 'This is not about Tony. You guys can point the finger at him, you can talk about the vacation, and if you do that, it's really unfair. It's really unfair. That's my teammate. That's my quarterback. You guys do that, it's not fair. We lost as a team. We lost as a team, man.' When pressed whether he respects Romo more than any other QB he's worked with, Owens responded that he's always gotten along with his quarterbacks, and it is the media who has blown that out of proportion.

AGAINST ALL ODDS - CHARGERS WIN IN INDY: With Gates and Castillo already hobbled, San Diego loses LT and Philip Rivers, and still rally to down defending champs. BTW - Eric Weddle and Antonio Cromartie are absolute freaks.
