BARBARO LOSES EIGHT-MONTH BATTLE:
Kentucky Derby winner
was euthanized Monday
after complications from his gruesome breakdown at last year's Preakness, ending a lenghty ordeal that prompted an outpouring of support from across the U.S.. A series of ailments, including laminitis in the left rear hoof and a recent abscess in the right rear hoof, proved too much for the gallant colt. Barbaro battled in his ICU stall for eight months, undergoing surgeries and other measures considered extradordinary in an effort to save him. The decision to put Barbaro out of his misery was made early Monday after it was said that he 'did not have a good night', with one of the horses owners saying
'We just reached a point where it was going to be difficult for him to go on without pain'
SHAQ CHASES DOWN HIT-N-RUN DRIVER:
Shaquille O'Neal, who is a reserve officer with the Miami Beach Police Department, followed a driver who
allegedly crashed into his Cadillac Escalade
then tried to flee the scene, according to the team. O'Neal and his bodyguard followed the driver for about five minutes. When the driver stopped near a gas station, Shaq approached the car and summoned a nearby police officer. The incident happened around 4 a.m., shortly after the Heat got home from a road trip in Chicago. O'Neal was helping the bodyguard unload luggage when the accident occurred.
TIGER WINS SEVENTH STRAIGHT PGA EVENT:
Only four more to equal Byron Nelson, as Tiger rallies on back nine to win Buick Invitational for third straight year. Next PGA event is expected to be the Los Angeles Open, one of the few events Tiger enters where he has not won.
IS IT TIME TO PUT DOWN BARBARO???
Someone on MSNBC did a very
good article on this subject
a couple weeks back, at which point is this not worth it anymore??? In case you haven't heard the latest,
Barbaro has had yet ANOTHER setback
, in fact this time a significant setback - an abscess has developed on the bone originally broke in the Preakness, and was not putting weight on the foot. Two steel pins have now been inserted, a precedure is said to be risky because it will put more weight on the limb. The vet now says that if the leg were to break again that they're going to have to 'call it quits', adding that Barbaro's attempted rehab has now reached 'a critical stage'. What has it been now, eight months??? That's two years for you and me - and Barbaro ain't getting out of that hospital anytime soon. I understood trying to save him initially (stud value) but if you've seen any pictures lately, the horse is sadly wasting away. As they said in the MSNBC article, there has to be a humane end to this saga at some point.
AMERICAN IDOL BEATS NHL ALL-STAR GAME 40-1:
Wonder what Simon thinks about hockey???? Yes, the NHL did hold an All-Star game during the week, and the Wednesday telecast on VS.
drew an estimated 673,000 viewers
in the U.S., a whopping 76 percent drop from the last All-Star game - which was played three years ago and aired on a Sunday on ABC. Meanwhile, American Idol drew an estimated 37 million viewers during the same time slot. The All-Star game was not a bust in all markets, the event drew a 7.1 in Buffalo and was also the highest ranked cable program in the Pittsburgh market. However the game did not rank among the top-20 cable programs in most markets and was even only 18th in host city Dallas. However there was tremendous interest in Canada, where ratings were up six percent from the last All-Star game with 1.238 million watching - nearly double the U.S. audience. And then there were those new 'form-fitting' jerseys which are only $425 on NHL.com.
CRITICS CLIMBING UP ON SALISBURY'S HILL:
Saying he has a lot on his plate right now (his father has been diagnosed with a very aggressive, terminal cancer), Sean Salisbury
denied using an anti-semetic phrase
during his Chicago radio show this week, as word of his commentary regarding Peyton Manning on NFL Live reached the mainstream media. Salisbury's tougne slip looks bad in the eyes of many because he immediately followed the word that rhymes with chew with 'nickel and dime'. Publicly, ESPN has defended Salisbury saying it's standing by the commentator.
TOP NFL DRAFT PROSPECT FACING SEXUAL ASSAULT RAP:
A former girlfriend is accusing former Cal star running back Marshawn Lynch of
domestic violence and sexual assault
. It's said the Alameda County D.A. is reviewing the woman's claims following a police investigation. In the complaint, the woman alleges Lynch choked, slapped and sexually assaulted her in Oakland the night of December 13th. Lynch has been appearring in most mock drafts as a mid-first round pick, with many slotting him with the Green Bay Packers selection at #16.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYERS CHARGED IN 'RACIALLY TINGED' FIGHT:
The parents of three Guilford College football players
charged with ethnic intimidation
defended their sons Friday, nearly a week after a fight between the players and three Palestinian students at the Greensboro, NC campus. In all five players face charges of assault and ethnic intimidation in connection with the fight. The charges do not reflect results of a police investigation. The Palestinian men said they were taunted with racial slurs and called 'terrorists' as they were beaten and kicked, according to court documents. The Guilford football coach has asked that students and faculty refrain from premature judgments regarding the case.
WILLIE WILLIAMS SIGHTING:
You remember Willie don't you, highly touted Miami area recruit, wrote a diary of his recruiting process, nearly froze to death on a trip to Auburn when the temperature dropped below 40 degrees, likes lobster a lot, and had something like 11 arrests on his record. Well, Willie is back on the radar and appears
headed for the University of Louisville
. This is after spending a year at West Los Angeles College, which is interesting since the last report I heard had Willie enrolling at J.C. power Pearl River Community College in Mississippi. I suggest Willie invest in some cold weather gear, I hear gets pretty nippy up in Kentucky...
DROPPED CALL - #31 CAR IN SPONSORSHIP SNAG:
A
sponsorship dispute is pitting
one of NASCAR’s most respected team owners against one of its biggest revenue sources, leaving officials hustling to work out a compromise two weeks before the start of the season. Richard Childress’ #31 car, driven by Jeff Burton, is sponsored by Cingular, which has been bought out by telecommunications giant AT&T, which is phasing out the Cingular branding. That would be fine except when NASCAR signed on with Nextel to be it's title sponsor, Nextel asked that no rival mobile phone companies be sponsored by individual race teams. That was agreed upon with the exception of Cingular and Alltel (Ryan Newman) being grandfathered in. In NASCAR's eyes, the new AT&T branding represents a different company, says a spokesman 'everybody knew the rules of engagement' early on. Incidentally, Nextel has merged with Sprint since becoming title sponsor, with the possibility that the Nextel branding could be phased out down the road.
FINGERS DISPUTES WISCONSIN TAX BILL:
Saying 'I'm not a tax dodger', baseball Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers
has hired an attorney
to help clear his name, as the state of Wisconsin claimes he owes $1.4 million in back taxes. Fingers says the bill can't possibly be right and says the recent unearthing of some old W-2 forms shows he paid $190,000 in state taxes and more than $1.1 million in federal taxes while he was pitching for the Milwaukee Brewers in the early-1980's. In December, Wisconsin put Fingers on its list of the state's top tax delinquents, with Fingers holding the dubious distinction of owing more than any other individual taxpayer. Rollie says he has been handicapped by bad luck as well. Fingers saysthe tax records from his Wisconsin working days were lost in a hurricane that ripped through the home of his Florida attorney.
CLASSLESS BEARS FANS:
Cresent City residents rightfully pissed
at sign a group of 'fans' brought to Soldier Field last weekend vowing that the Bears will 'Finish What Katrina Started'. The incident has now caught the attention of mayor Richard Daley, who called the fans actions 'deplorable' (but Steve Bartman remains public enemy #1 in Chicago). One angry person from New Orleans wrote a Chicago TV station vowing never to visit the city again, and added that he is praying that nothing catastrophic ever occurs in Chicago that forces literally the entire city from their homes. Good point, karma can be a bitch - and their was the Great Chicago Fire once.
TEENAGE NIGERIAN NIGHTMARE:
The saying NFL personnel people like to use when someone does well in pre-draft workouts is that someone 'has earned himself a lot of money' by elevating his draft stock. That was
definitely the case this week
for Louisville defensive tackle Amobi Okoye whose story is unique. The Nigerian born Okoye graduated from high school at age 15 and now has his diploma from Louisville at the ripe old age of 19. LSU receiver Dwayne Bowe along with USC center Ryan Kalil have also been identified as having spectacular weeks in Mobile. In case you are looking to catch Saturday's contest on ESPN and hear Mel Kiper talk about the prospects at naseum, there's a good chance you are out of luck - Senior Bowl coverage now appears on good old NFL Network.
BREAK OUT THE ICE CREAM:
Another great Ricig cartoon in Sports Weekly, which is beginning to rank with the old syndicated Tank McNamara skits that used to appear in the scoreboard page in may papers. This week's edition was about 'NFL medical terminology' - including a precedure known as a 'Tomlinson-ectomy', or the Chargers being removed from the NFL Playoffs. Yeah, that fourth quarter felt like the New England coach himself ripping something right out of your throat. Incidentally, if you were to include the adenoids in the deal, that would be known as a T & A...
SUNS ON SECOND 15-GAME WINNING STREAK:
And are probably landed in Milwaukee as I speak,
so I will give them 16
. Strange thing is outside of the two 15-game streaks the team is 4-8 otherwise. I'm very hesitant to risk jinxing this team, a couple years ago this time I talked about the Suns being on pace to challenge the all-time best single-season record and on cue Steve Nash got hurt and the team lost five in a row.
AM-BUSH, YAHOO UNCOVERS MORE ON REGGIE:
I asked just
last week on my blog
where have all the exclusive pieces about Reggie Bush on Yahoo had gone??? Should have known, they were waiting for the week before the Super Bowl. Sure enough, here comes another
Cole/Robinson ambush journalism piece
, saying there are now taped conversations that could confirm Bush took cash and gifts worth up to $300,000 while he was playing for USC. Bush just completed his rookie NFL season, rushing for 565 this season and had 88 receptions for 742 yards along with nine touchdowns overall. Chuck had yet another bombshell perfectly timed should the Saints made the Bowl. I still wonder why no one other than Yahoo is ratting stuff out on Bush, but Reg is not helping himself not addressing the issue - and you have to wonder about USC not giving him a sideline pass at the Rose Bowl.
'72 DOLPHINS DISSED IN ESPN RANKINGS???
Hopefully Larry Csonka did not read this in the Aleutian outback. 1989 Joe Montana/Jerry Rice 49er team leads list of
all previous 80 Super Bowl teams
, followed by the '85 Bears, '78 Steelers, '92 Cowboys, and '84 Niners - who at 15-1 I actually put right there with the '89 team. The undefeated '72 Dolphins actually fall behind the '96 Packers in seventh place. The piece says that the Dolphins had the easiest schedule of any Super Bowl champion, and all three of their playoff games were won by a touchdown or less. I disagree, due to a rotational system used at the time the Dolphins were forced to play the 1972 AFC Championship game in Pittsburgh (a week after the Immaculate Reception game) and managed to win in that madhouse. And except for the Yepremian play, the Redskins got nowhere close to the end zone in Super Bowl 7, and their was the fact the the Phins went eight regular season games with backup Earl Morrell under center. The worst three Super Bowl champions ranked were the the 1970 Colts (#51), '68 Jets (#49), and '67 Packers (#48). I may have to rank the '67 Packers worst as they were hanging on by their finger nails that year and had the good fortune of hosting the NFL Championship that year, again by virtue of a rotational system. Anything warmer than 13 below that day and the Cowboys probably win. The 1979 Rams (9-7), who actually gave the Steelers a run for their money in SB14, are ranked last at #80, followed by the '03 Panthers (another team who nearly won), the '00 Giants, '82 Dolphins (David Woodley), and the '85 Patriots that was devoured by the Bears, who actually gets my vote for #80, closly followed by the '94 Chargers and all four Minnesota Viking teams who ESPN ranked at #65, #60, #53, and #45. But let's face it, any team that gets to the big game has to be pretty good.
DUNGY TO WALK AWAY IF COLTS WIN IT ALL???
Says he will wait until after Super Bowl before
considering his future with Blue Horseshoe
. Dungy signed a contract extension last year that would keep him in Circle City through 2009. But many have wondered whether the 51-year-old coach, who previously said he intended to retire at age 50, might resign if he wins the Super Bowl. Dungy's name also briefy came into consideration during the University of Minnesota's coach search, that position has since been filled. Don't see him ever going to a college job, not even USC or Ohio State.
CARSON PALMER SPEAKS OUT AGAINST BENGALS ARRESTS:
The Cincinnati Bengals have notched more player arrests (13) in the last year than any NFL team scored victories, and
quarterback Carson Palmer is not happy
. After hearing about Jonathan Joseph's arrest, Palmer said
'It has to stop. If it doesn't stop, we're not going to have any fans left and I don't blame them. It's ridiculous.'
THE BAKERS DOZEN:
The entire list
.
SEAN SALISBURY LATEST ESPN EMPLOYEE IN HOT WATER???
Possibly yet another one of these stories that gain legs 24-48 hours after the broadcast occurred. The incident in question is
Sean Salisbury's analysis
on how Peyton Manning led the Colts from a 21-3 deficit to the AFC title. Here is Salsbury's alleged statement regarding Manning's 'mindset':
'(Peyton's actions said) No need to panic. We'll nip, we'll tuck, we'll go, we'll punch, we'll JEW, we'll do it all.
' An ESPN spokesman has come to Salsbury's defense, saying he meant to say CHEW but he just slipped up. You can
listen to the audio here
and make up your own mind. Perhaps the story could rest there except Salisbury's name has come up in another matter, according to various media reports, Salisbury took a picture of his anatomy and showed it to female co-workers a few months ago. Hmmm, what they say happens out of camera range in Bristol...
BRUCE PEARL GOES SHIRTLESS AT LADY VOLS GAME:
They might make target practice out of this image at the University of Illinois, as Pearl puts on the body paint for a Tennessee v. Duke woman's showdown. You think Pat Summitt might return the favor in a game Pearl is coaching with the UT men's team??? I'm going to have to bet against that one. If Pearl ever leaves Tennessee, one might think he could become Dick Vitale's successor as ESPN's lead analyst/showman.
MLB EXTRA INNINGS APPEARS HEADED FOR DIRECTV:
Looks like all of you who have been griping about MLB's silly blackout restrictions extending hundreds of miles (Iowa and Vegas are blacked out from six teams) will now have
something bigger to complain about
. All indications are that MLB's Extra Innings package is headed with an exclusive deal with DIRECTV, who has already held a monopoly with NFL Sunday Ticket for over a decade. Obviously this means that if you are in an apartment and your only option is cable (or you prefer Dish Network) you will be out of luck. All indications are however that the video will still be available over the internet on MLB.TV, but we're talking watching on the internet v. hi-def possibilities. I still like the radio package as far as baseball is concerned, better announcers at just a fraction of the TV cost.
CUP DRIVER PISSES ON HIS CAR!?!?
Can you imagine Jerry Punch reporting on this if he was still a pit road reporter -
'I SMELL A NOTICABLE SCENT OF URINE AS THE #1 CAR PULLS INTO HIS PIT STALL...'
It would feel like just another Friday night in the ER for Dr. Punch. In any event Martin Truex Jr. had the great misfortune of having a sheriff officer witness him
pissing in his home garage
after a night out last week. The officer approaches him and asks
'I hope that's worth 100 bucks'
. Truex responds 'it is', then tries TO HAND HIM a c-note, after which the sheriff asked Truex to put his hands behind his back. Truex ends up being ticketed for disorderly intoxication, the driver said he was not behind the wheel on the way home.
KEVIN HARVICK CALLS TERESA EARNHARDT 'DEADBEAT OWNER':
Harvick rips Junior's stepmother
, who I guess does not regularly attend the races. Get a feeling RCR is trying to angle to get Junior to drive the #3 car in 2008???
