Because he is accused of assaulting his girlfriend in front of their children, a judge has now ruled that Sprewell may communicate with his children only by phone, e-mail or text message. The Town Judge extended an order of protection keeping Sprewell, best known for choking Golden State Warriors coach P.J. Carlesimo at a practice nearly ten years ago now, away from girlfriend Candace Cabbil and their four children. Just last month Cabbil filed a $200 million lawsuit against Sprewell last month, claiming Sprewell broke his promise to 'share his life and his fortune with her'. Sprewell flew in from the Milwaukee area for the court session. Inside, Sprewell told the judge he had avoided contact with Cabbil, saying, 'We don't talk.' JOHN KERRY TRYING TO PUT STOP TO MLB/DIRECTV DEAL: You may not agree with everything he does or says, but give Senator John Kerry credit for asking FCC Chairman Kevin Martin for an investigation over a deal that would give DirecTV an exclusive deal on the Extra Innings package that had been available to most cable consumers in recent years. Kerry reveals that Martin has sent him a letter sharing his concern over the proposed deal saying 'I am concerned whenever consumers cannot purchase the programming they want or are forced to purchase programming they don't want' WILD NHL BRAWL BETWEEN SABRES/SENATORS: Hope you saw the Youtube video earlier in the week of an old newsreel with the Flyers and L.A. Kings combining for 352 penalty minutes in one period - with one player getting 55 minutes by himself (that would help someone in a fantasy league). Well, the Sabres and Senators came close Thursday night after all 12 skaters found a dance partner after a blindside hit by Ottawa goon Chris Neil left Buffalo co-captain Chris Drury bloody and woozy. And when I say all 12 skaters that does include the goalies. Let's see, Ray Emery or Martin Biron - when in doubt go with the guy who once tried to get an image of Mike Tyson painted on his mask, and is just coming off a three game suspension, that would be Mr. Emery, who got 22 minutes and a game misconduct. Check out the box score, it's about as lengthy as the phone book listings... SHEA HILLENBRAND STILL NOT BIG FAN OF BLUE JAYS FRONT OFFICE: You may remember Shea getting a one-way ticket out of Toronto after nearly coming to blows with manager John Gibbons in the Blue Jays clubhouse. Now with the Angels, Shea tells a tale of Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi being equally outspoken and controlling, and that he tried to 'bury' him. Saying that J.P would deny it, Shea says that he got word through his agent that his playing time would be cut unless he 'got in line'. Calmly recalling the chain of events which led to his showdown with Gibbons, Shea explained that he is not a 'yes' person and that management chose to look at him as an 'a-hole' rather than a competitor. Shea added that he saw the handwriting on the wall after he made only one pinch-hit appearance in a May series at Colorado where Gibbons ripped into his team during a clubhouse meeting, referring to players that didn't want to be part of the team while supposedly glaring at Shea. The Blue Jays are not the only organization that Hillenbrand had a nasty departure from, Shea had words for Red Sox GM Theo Epstein after leaving Boston in 2003. PAC-MAN STORY FINALLY REPORTED IN NATIONAL MEDIA: Not really much more than what had been said over the last 48 hours. Jones was moved outside the club while a woman he was with allegedly hit a stripper with a champagne bottle. The shooter is still to said to be at large. At the NFL Combine, coach Jeff Fisher had no comment. PAC-MAN HIRES RAY LEWIS LAW FIRM: Adam 'Pacman' Jones has retained the law firm that successfully defended Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis against double murder charges in 2000 to be Jones' lead counsel in the matter involving the alleged incident at the Minxx Gentleman’s Club in Las Vegas. CZABAN BLOG: Just how many lives does Pac-Man get???JAKE PLUMMER READY TO CALL IT QUITS??? Although teammates refer to him as a great competitor, they also say they wouldn't at all be surprised if Jake called it a career rather than stay with the Broncos or hook on with another team. It's said that Plummer doesn't crave the limelight and isn't into spending a lot of money. Another teammate adds that it would be surprising if Jake walked away and 'lived in a mountain hut somewhere' COREY DILLON WILL RETIRE: According to a report, the 32-year-old Dillon will ask the Patriots for his release and walk away from the game on his own terms.TOMMY MORRISON VICTORIOUS IN RETURN BOUT: Makes quick work of tomato can in second round TKO. The bout was the first in 11 years for the 38-year old Morrison, who was banished from boxing in 1995 after testing HIV positive. Recent HIV tests have been negative, and Morrison now believes the 1995 test was a 'false-positive'. SHOCKER - 80'S CELTICS LEGEND DEAD: Dennis Johnson, 52, dies suddenly after overseeing his team's practice in Texas. Johnson was coach of the Austin Toros of the NBA's D-League. DJ was part of three Championship teams with the Celtics and also starred with the Phoenix Suns and Seattle SuperSonics, where he was part of another title team in 1979. Easily recognized for his freckles and reddish-Afro, DJ was known as one of the best defensive players in league history. Johnson also had a brief stint as interim coach of the Los Angeles Clippers in 2002.FUZZY ZOELLER SUING WIKIPEDIA 'AUTHOR': Next time you post something on Wikipedia, you best be sure that what you are writing is factual - oh, and it might be a good idea not make Wikipedia postings at work. Golfer Fuzzy Zoeller is going after an author who allegedly wrote a defamatory paragraph about him in Wikipedia. No, it didn't have anything to do with the Tiger Woods controversy in 1997. The paragraph about him said that he abused alcohol and drugs among other things. Although the posting was eventually removed from Wikipedia, it was picked up by other websites/blogs. The source of the posting has been traced to a computer with an Internet address assigned to Josef Silny & Associates, a Miami education consulting firm. Josef Silny says he is shocked by the allegation and is going to have his IS department investigate. Possible job opening at that company?? PAC-MAN JONES DAY 4: Incredibly, the Pacman Jones story is not still not getting a bit of play in the mainstream sports media. But in other forums it's all over the place - the latest according to a Vegas blog is that police indeed have the video of the melee at the Minxx club that led to three people getting shot. SEARCH WARRANT REVEALED, RAPPER NELLY POSSIBLY INVOLVED: According to warrant, topless dancer promoter took a trash bag full of Pacman Jones' cash and fled the Minxx strip club early Monday, leading to brawl and shooting. Police recovered more than $81,000 in cash from the promoter's room that investigators believe belonged to Jones. The warrant also shed light on what happened may have happened inside the strip club before the shooting occurred. Cornelius Haynes, also known as Nelly (and also Charlotte Bobcats part-owner) had tossed hundreds of $1 bills ('making it rain') on the stage. The promotor told the strippers to pick up the money, which apparently was only supposed to be used for visual effect. One of the dancers then took the trash bag filled with Jones' money and a 'melee broke out'. Pacman was said to be irate about the loss of his money, and the fact that girls were in a frenzy. Jones along with a woman named Sadia Morrison were soon engaged with security, who were soon able to remove Jones from the club. But Morrison was biting security and eventually hit a bouncer over the head with a champagne bottle. Minutes later a man with a semi-automatic handgun opened fire outside. A police source says that they have a strong suspicion than an associate of Jones may have been the triggerman, but have not been able to verify the link. Incidentally, Nelly is among the most lucrative hip-hop entertainers, with his worth listed at $60 million. (LV REVIEW JOURNAL STORY)DAYTONA RATINGS CRASH: It wasn't just half the field that was a wreck in the final wreck, as the TV ratings were down a whopping 10.6 percent compared to NBC's broadcast last year. This year's race was still the fifth-highest rating in Daytona 500 history. Fox, which split network rights with NBC under the previous television contract, will show the Daytona 500 every year through 2014 under the most recent contract. LAMPLEY PLEADS NO CONTEST: Sentenced to three years of probation Wednesday after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of violating a restraining order. In a statement released by his agent, Lampley said he did not commit a violent act, saying 'The thing that I am most guilty of is choosing (the) wrong woman' In addition to the stay-away order and probation, Lampley was ordered to enroll in a 52-week domestic violence recovery program, perform 40 hours of volunteer work and pay a fine of nearly $700. FALL DOWN SEVEN TIMES, BUT DOESN'T GET UP EIGHT: It's good news cancelled out by worse news for the Miami Heat. Pat Riley returns behind the bench, but D-Wade leaves in a wheelchair with either a dislocated or separated shoulder, expected to be out for rest of regular season. The coach or your franchise player - who's more important, I'd keep Wade and have Riles call the plays from home if it came to that. LAKERS JACKED UP BY PORTLAND: Less than 18 hours to pull that Jason Kidd trade. Meanwhile Lakers lose sixth straight game, not exactly a Milwaukee Bucks freefall but not good either.OHIO ST. SLEEPWALKS PAST PENN ST.: Think the Buckeyes were looking ahead to Wisconsin??? ORIGINAL SIX STILL BACKBONE OF NHL CULTURE: Struggles of Bruins and Blackhawks nothing new - but Detroit and Montreal remain among the top draws and the Maple Leafs are the league's biggest moneymaker. SOUTH AMERICAN SOCCER VIOLENCE: Projectiles thrown onto the field during a tournament match in Paraguay. Fan brawling in Argentine stadiums. Fist fights at a match in Uruguay and restive spectators in Colombia, Mexico and Chile. Resurgent soccer violence has become rampant in Latin America, where Argentina has cornered a reputation for having some of the most violent hooligans, and raising concern among clubs and regulators alike as a rash of incidents overshadows the sport. Doesn't sounld like anything that new. KICK RETURNER SUES FINANCIAL 'ADVISOR': Buffalo Bills cornerback Terrence McGee thought he was set for a while when he signed a contract extension a year ago which included a $5 million bonus. Now McGee has filed a lawsuit seeking to recoup more than $1 million. The players says his former financial adviser funneled into unauthorized and possibly bogus investments. The advisor is accused of using forged documents to spend $600,000 on what is described as worthless as probably phony stock certificates for what's siad to be a computer software company in Austin, Texas. The advisor is also said to had put $450,000 in an unknown land development project in the Dominican Republic without McGee's knowledge. PAC-MAN UPDATE - VERY UGLY DETAILS STARTING TO COME OUT: Well Dan Wetzel said in Yahoo last week it would only take one knucklehead to ruin Vegas' NBA weekend, and it sounds like it has come to pass. According to a source Las Vegas police believe an 'associate' (translated homeboy) of NFL player Adam Pac-Man Jones might have been the person who shot three people early Monday morning outside a strip club, leaving one guard paralyzed. Jones maintained that no one in his group was involved in the fracas, but others are saying that is not even close to the case. According to a club owner, Pac-Man and his posse were in the club earlier in the night, but returned at about 4 A.M. (always a good time). At that point, Adam started throwing $1 bills on stage, known in street lang as 'making it rain'. When one of the strippers started grabbing the bills without Pac-Man's permission, Adam allegedly got angry, grabbed her hair and slammed her head against the stage. Then a security guard who happens to be a mixed-martial artist with professional fighting experience (I hear clubs hire those types), intervened. At the point Pac-Man allegedly threatens to kill the bouncer. Melee ensues, then moves outside when a gunman (possibly the 'associate') opens fire, hitting two guards and another patron. Says the owner, 'He goes out, retrieves a gun, then shoots two security guards, pretty much making good on the threat made by Pac-Man Jones' One guard is out of the hospital, but the other is in critical condition with a severed spine and is not expected to walk again. Oh, and they say there is plenty of surveillance tape and witnesses - stay tuned... AN 'UNMIGATED FAILURE': Jason Whitlock says weekend was an out-of-control street party that featured gunplay, violence, non-stop weed smoke and general mayhem - and that any talk of holding the event in New Orleans next year is total lunacy. Writer adds that word of all the criminal activity that transpired during the weekend has been slowly leaking out on Las Vegas radio shows and TV newscasts as well as internet sites (such as here) the past 24 hours. ANOTHER WHITLOCK COLUMN: Get a feeling this guy's not nuts about Vegas??? Check this out - 'Las Vegas Boulevard was at a standstill Friday through Sunday. The 4-mile-long Strip was swallowed by youthful loiterers and around-the-clock police foot patrol that stretched from the Stratosphere to the Mandalay Bay. It felt like occupied territory and the French Quarter. You were overwhelmed by the smell of weed, the use of profanity and the N-word-a.' PAC-MAN FIRES AGENT: Pacman Jones has terminated his contract with sports agent Michael Huyghue, according to the NFL Players Association. Jones is currently in the process of looking for a new agent. On the current NFLPA database, Jones is currently listed without an agent. ALL-STAR WEEKEND LEADS TO 400 ARRESTS: Fights, shootings, and a city brought to an absolute standstill once the game ended, with JetBlue like gridlock just trying to get a taxi. Although some accounts had the large contingent of law enforcement being overmatched, most consider keeping things somewhat in control as a success. You just have to wonder about New Orleans next year though... PAC-MAN AND CHRIS HENRY: Didn't they both come out in the same draft??? No wonder Coach Rod felt like a 5000 lb weight was lifted off him when they left school. And if those two were ever at the same party, it might be Armageddon... TIMELINE: PAC-MAN's already lengthy NFL legal history. Grab a cup of coffee first, it will take a while to read. TROJAN MAN - MOON OVER PROVO!!! What could possibly top Randy Moss mooning the crowd at Lambeau Field a couple years back??? Sounds like some unfortunate souls in Utah found the answer to that question this past weekend. During a tournament game between USC and BYU (I didn't even know they had hockey programs), SC goalie Mickey Meyer 'rode his stick like a (Trojan???) horse', dropped his hockey pants, mooned the crowd and slapped his buttocks going around the ice. Too bad the band couldn't make the trip and play Conquest. Meyer was ejected from the game and also ticketed by an officer who was working security. Says a local police sargent, 'This is a small town. This was a college team playing and hockey's a wild game. Sometimes things get out of hand' The rink manager sounded a little less amused saying 'We don't treat this as a funny incident. We're a family oriented business. It's a one-time incident and we try to do what we can to protect ourselves.' Fight on everyone. RADIO BROADCAST OF INCIDENT: Not exactly Eli Gold doing play-by-play but here it is...WIFE OF ORIOLES COACH SUFFERS STROKE: Wife of Orioles coach and former Brewers/Cub manager Tom Trebelhorn is said to be in a coma after suffering a stroke in the back of her brain and undergoing two surgeries over the weekend. A former local celebrity in Milwaukee who oversaw the city's annual Summerfest celebration for two decades, Bo Black, 61, has been said to have been in bad helath the past few years. Ms. Black had heart surgery a few years back and revealed in a TV news interview last year that her calcified aorta was the 'size of a 400-lb person' STORM THE COURT, WHY NOT??? The time-honored tradition of students running onto the floor after big wins have gotten some more play in recent days, in part thanks due to an incident involving a Florida player at Vanderbilt, and the SEC fining schools $25,000 whose fans storm the court - like that will ever stop them. YET ANOTHER DIRTY BIRD??? It seems lately either someone who plays for the Falcons, or used to play for the Falcons, runs afoul from the law. Now former defensive back Ashley Ambrose has been cited for allegedly attacking his wife and trying to prevent her from calling police. Ambrose was released on $5,700 bond soon after arriving in the pokey. VEGAS TROUBLE FOR PAC-MAN??? Did you really think we just got through All-Star weekend in Vegas with a clean sheet, you mean no professional athlete getting in any hot water. And if a pro athlete got in trouble, who do you think would be the betting-line favorite in just about any pool??? Police wanted to talk to Pac-Man Jones after three people were wounded (two critically) at a Vegas club early Monday morning. Pac-Man is said not to be a suspect in the incident and is free to go home - or another club. Let's see, 140-something days until training camp. Do you really think Pac-Man can go THAT long without getting busted or at least questioned again??? UPDATE - PACMAN BIT BOUNCER!?!? Leave it to NFL Network's Adam Shefter, who reports that witnesses claimed that Pacman Jones BIT the ankle of the bouncer who wound up getting shot during the melee. Maybe Adam thought that he just got his power-up and that the bouncer was one of the blue ghosts. Oh, and there's more - it's said Adam was recovering from a previously UNREPORTED shoulder surgery and that the the bouncer 'popped' Pac-Man's shoulder while holding him in an arm bar. Pac-Man reportedly left Vegas in a great deal of pain. These players are fearing the day NFL Network gets on basic cable.CAREER OF BROWNS CENTER APPEARS OVER: Center LeCharles Bentley signed 6-year/$36 million contract last year, then totalled his patella tendon on something like the FIRST PLAY of training camp - then got a staph infection (which goes around the Browns camp for some reason) and some other complications. Now he needs another surgery and will miss the '07 season. Two missed seasons usually spells the end of a career - I imagine the Browns try to cut their losses now. |
