PICTURE OF THE DAY: (From left) Pro wrestling icons Bobby Heenan, Roddy Piper, and Gene Okerlund in Toronto in 2005. Okerlund has slowed down from his interviewing days with the AWA, and later WWF and WCW from the 1970's through the '90's, although he hosts a weekly show featuring classic matches and still shows up for occasional events. What you may not know is that his son played four years on the University of Minnesota's hockey team, and was also a 1988 U.S. Olympian before a brief stint in the NHL. Okerlund has also been a success in the burger and take-out pizza business, and proudly proclaims he will put up his product against Domino's, etc. You can read more about Mean Gene and his memorable career from this 2006 article here.

EMMITT SMITH GETS IRVIN'S OLD JOB: Will appear on ESPN's NFL Countdown, as well as it's Monday night show and various ESPN Radio segments.

HAS TOM BRADY KNOCKED UP ANOTHER ONE!?!? We've always known he likes to spread the ball around, but has the one-time milk-toast QB suddenly gone the Steve Garvey route??? Last month, former girlfriend Bridget Moynahan announced that she is preggers with Brady's baby - Now reports have indiciated that Brady's new item, Gisele Bundchen might now also be expecting. It's said that Bundchen (who I've never heard of) would be two months in while Bridget is three months along - that would have Brady becoming a dad twice in the space of a month next football season. Both Bundchen and her publicist are denying the reports.

TITANS MAY HAVE LOOPHOLE TO PULL PLUG ON PACMAN GAME: By not reporting last February's arrest in Georgia, the Titans could be allowed to jettison Pacman Jones without taking a hit off the salary cap since Adam had in fact violated his contract. When asked about the situation, coach Jeff Fisher said 'Typically speaking, if there is a situation like this, it's the player's responsibility to inform the club and the league. That did not take place'

O.J. MAYO 420: This guy's beginning to sound like Randy Moss when he was a highly recruited West Virginia stud. Prep basketball star O.J. Mayo was one of four young males cited for misdemeanor possession of marijuana late Friday night after a traffic stop. Officers noticed a tell-tale scent, but none of the four (including OJM) in the car claimed ownership, thus were all charged. Just goes to show you need to by the fresh pine, and not fresh weed scent after going through the car wash.

TOUR GOLFER INVESTIGATED IN 'DRAG RACE' DEATH: PGA Tour player Arjun Atwal is under investigation after police said what appeared to be a high-speed street race that ended in a fatal crash. Atwal was not injured in the accident late Saturday afternoon but the other driver died at a hospital. According to a state trooper, the two engaged in a drag race that reached speeds of 100 MPH before both lost control upon reaching a curve on a suburban road. Atwal's 2006 BMW spun and came to rest harmlessly on the shoulder, while the other driver hit a tree, with his Mercedes 'shattering' upon impact. According to the trooper, Atwal at the very least faces charges of engaging in a street race.

THAT OTHER TOURNAMENT... Don't believe the line that this tourney merely crowns the 66th best team in college basketball. Missouri State (36th RPI), Drexel (39th), Syracuse (50th) and Kansas St. (56th) lead NIT field.

'RACIST' FACEBOOK HAS USC PLAYERS IN HOT WATER: A racist Facebook on-line group created by USC linebacker Clay Matthews Jr. shows a graphic of a black baby in handcuffs, which has outraged students according to a student newspaper. The paper says Matthews created the group known as 'White Nation' along with teammates David Buehler, Brian Cushing, Dan Deckas and Dallas Sartz. The paper said an athletic department source requesting anonymity said the group was a joke and not serious, claiming the group began after a black player on the team nicknamed the players 'White Nation' during last season.

SURE BET - VEGAS RACE TO BE DISASTER: So much for the 'improvements' at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, which has accomplished just about nothing except turning the track into a landmine and taking away any semblence of competitive racing. It doesn't speak well when NASCAR orders the ol' smaller gas tanks along with a harder tire compound everyone's complaining about. Busch race was marred by a dozen caution flags, look forward to more of the same in the Cup race, as drivers comparing the surface to driving on black ice. Temperatures expected in the mid-80's will not help neither. Most of the drivers are just looking for the checkered flag to be thrown so they can get the hell out of there.

BRACKETMANIA RUNS WILD: They say it costs $1.2 billion in productivity, the FBI says it's 'illegal' but have much bigger fish to fry, the NCAA would like to say you ought to be able to enjoy their tournament without it, and even CBS makes sure not to talk about it too much. It's what's become the most betted sporting event in American, the infamous NCAA bracket pools. With high-speed Internet access common in most offices, the urge to follow the action has become difficult to resist. Thanks to bosses that don't want employees to be surfing CBS's on-line coverage, this is sure to be another record week for Websense - one of their executives says 'historically, March Madness has been a huge productivity drain on businesses'. Now I just want to know how many pools are there going on at Websense's headquarters, not to mention IT departments that police the stuff - to coin a phrase, if they want to bust up a tournament bracket pool they would have a donut in their mouths. Bosses should chill, it's one freakin' week - or actually until the first couple of upsets bite me early on Thursday...

AND WHAT ABOUT THE IT GEEKS?? 'The IT staff now knows a lot about everyone — they've become the keeper of secrets'

JAKE MAKES IT OFFICIAL: Wearing jeans with a T-shirt saying 'Freedom', Jake Plummer officially annonces his retirement without answering questions in quickie presser before going to handball tournament.

MARK WILSON STORY STARTING TO GET INK: Incidentally, he's back in the hunt at the Tampa Open, just four strokes off the pace after Round 2. But this article talks about the two-stroke infraction Wilson called on himself after his caddie told Camilo 'three percent' Villegas what club Wilson had just used on a tee shot. Like three percent needed the help. As I suggested earlier in the week, that caddie was not feeling good about himself - and notice the writer saying that more than one caddie has been 'thrown under the beverage cart'. By the way, the rule violation Wilson docked himself on is in the opinion of many a gray-area rule, in this article Wilson notes that golfers often show the club to the TV cameraman so the commentators have the info, and also caddies leave their bags open so their competitors would know what clubs they're using. Wilson adds that while the rule is regarded loosely, that Greg Chalmers once disqualified himself from a tournament for a similar infraction he did not report.

PACKER FANS OBJECT TO POSSIBLE MOSS TRADE: When the widely rumored trade was brought up to GM Ted Thompson in front of a crowd at the Packers' annual Fan Fest, boos and hisses drowned out any timid cheers. A recent JSOnline poll had just slightly over half the fans approving a Randy Moss trade. The New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are also mentioned as potential destinations for the controversial receiver.

HUSBAND OF MICHIGAN ST. WOMEN'S COACH IN TROUBLE??? A Michigan State professor whose wife coaches the women's basketball team was arrested at a Florida airport on an assault charge after he allegedly emptied a trash bin, swung it at an officer and bit him on the finger at an airport. John McCallie, a 56-year-old associate professor of economics, was charged with felony counts of battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence, and a misdemeanor count of breach of peace. McCallie landed in Sarasota on Wednesday with Spartans woman's basketball coach Joanne McCallie. According to a police report, Mr. McCallie flipped after one of the couple's bags did not arrive in the baggage claim. Airline officials told the couple they needed baggage claim stubs to find the lost luggage.

THE SERVING NUN: Once on her way to superstardom while ranked #2 in the world as a teenager, Andrea Jaeger has traded her braces, ponytail, and tennis skirt for a black nun's habit. Recently, the 41-year old Jaeger became a Dominican nun, the next step on a journey hardly anyone could have envisioned when was perfunctorily dispatching opponents twice her age.

NHL GOON FACES LENGHTY SUSPENSION: Chris Simon vowed to get even for a clean hit late in the game, and ends up swinging his stick slashing the guy's face - and is now suspended indefinitely.

BASEBALL CLAIMS TO BE GIVING IN DEMAND 'EQUAL CHANCE' (HA!!): As expected, baseball signs 7-year/$700 million deal with DirecTv, although also claiming that InDemand has a chance to retain the package if they match the deal, plus agree to put something planned to be called the Baseball Channel to be carried on the basic tier beginning in 2009. Don't hold your breath on the cable companies taking that 'offer'. Never mind the $700 million, what are the chances of Time Warner, etc. carrying a MLB channel when the NFL Network issue remains unresolved. And actually the cable networks have no choice to say no to this offer. Meanwhile, here's a nice fluff piece by MLB (those are getting increasingly tired) on how you can still follow your Washington Nationals or whomever no matter where you live by subscribing to the online package. So you can watch in on your computer instead of hi-def at home. By the way, InDemand also lost supplemental NASCAR coverage to DirecTV this year - I've seen it at the bar, it sucks.

BLUFFTON BUS CRASH CLAIMS SEVENTH VICTIM: Zach Arend, 18, had been in critical condition with internal injuries, a fractured pelvis, and collapsed lungs. That brings the total death toll in the devastating crash in Atlanta last week to 7, including the driver and his wife. The teams coach and two other players remain in the hospital.

INVESTIGATORS SEEK SOURCE OF STOUT STEROIDS: Two players had steroids typically used for equine athletes, as well as other assorted varieties of testosterone. Yet another player had a drug that is used in the treatment of breast cancer.

PGA PLAYERS NOT HAPPY WITH TIGER 'INVITATIONAL': Rank and file in the PGA not happy about plans to have Tiger Woods new invitational in the D.C. area to have a limited field of around 120 players, similar to Jack Nicklaus' Memorial and Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Classic. A normal field in a PGA event has 156 participants. Other examples of invitationals include the Masters (around 90 players), the Heritage Classic (South Carolina), and the Colonial (Texas). Commissioner Tim Finchim has hinted that he likes the idea of the short field due to the 'prestige' of the new event, and also points out that he wants the event to be a positive experience for the players and doesn't wanted to see the pace of play slow during a week where heat and humidity will no doubt be a factor.

LSU WOMAN'S COACH QUITS AMIDST ALLEGATIONS: Pokey Chatman's shock resignation as women's basketball coach at Louisiana State University occured after the school became aware of an alleged inappropriate sexual relationship between Chatman and a former player on Chatman's team, according to a published report. The university, the sources said, learned of the relationship from an employee within the basketball program. Chatman initially announced plans to resign after the postseason, now says she will not coach the Lady Tigers in the NCAA tournament. Chatman is 90-14 as LSU's head coach, including two Final Four appearances. Before that, she was 15-5 as acting head coach during the the 2003-04 season. Chatman, a Louisiana native, has been associated at LSU as both a player and coach for nearly 20 years.

'FORM-FITTING' TREND CONTINUES, NEW UNIFORMS UNVEILED: Ohio State, Florida, Syracuse, and Arizona basketball teams unveil new uniforms featuring a tighter fit but more breathable material. New types of fabrics that beats off sweat are starting to be introduced in college football and the NHL unveiled new jersey's at this years All-Star game, to be adopted by all 30 teams for the 2007-08 season. Bad news for fat people who like wearing the old stuff, not to mention the jerseys will be even more expensive than the current versions.

BOXER RECOVERING FROM BRAIN SURGERY: Tijuana boxer Victor Burgos said to be showing encouraging signs after having a blood clot removed following a beating at the hands of IBF Champion Vic Darchinyan last weekend. Burgos (39-15-3) fought gamely but was dominated by Darchinyan (28-0). After reassuring the referee he was all right, Burgos stumbled backwards as he was chased by Darchinyan, and clocked a couple more times before the fight was stopped at 1:27 of the 12th round. Burgos then slumped into his corner and began slipping out of counsciousness.

CBS DOUBLING BANDWITH FOR MMOD: Sportsline planning to accomodate up to 300,000 on-line viewers this year, compared to 175,000 last year - the first year internet viewing of out-of-market early round NCAA games were offered for free. CBS is also planning on improving the image quality for the video and making the online video player larger. There are a total of 56 out-of-market games during the first three rounds of the tournament, but after accounting for blackout rules (games available on the local CBS affiliate most viewers would have a choice of about 37 games. The first-round games are considered a boon to those watching at work, provided the employer doesn't block access.

ATTACK TURNS OUT 'FORTUNATE' FOR HOCKEY REF: 45-year old hockey ref Dale Neudorf was cross-checked in the face and assaulted by a player during a recreational tournament in Saskatchewan last month. Afterwards doctors wanted Neudorf checked out in Saskatoon to rule out any post-concussion concerns. A MRI exam discovered a tumor unrelated to the concussion that probably would not had been diagnosed otherwise. It is believed that the tumor can be removed and will be done once the concussion symptoms subside, meanwhile the 21-year old accused in the attack remains at large on charges or aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and breach of recognizance.

SI TACKLES GLOBAL WARMING: Already making news this week with the steroid/HGH story that they vow will 'rock the sports world' (that's not understating it), Sports Illustrated also offers an insightful cover story on what the sports world can do about global warming. The article notes that the crisis is already affecting winter pastimes such as ice fishing and skiing, and warns that if sports doesn't do it's part in action and awareness - that Spring Training may soon be held in St. Paul.

AT&T PUTS THEIR NAME ON ANOTHER EVENT: Leave it to the globalist phone giant to immediately put their sponsorship stamp on the new Washington D.C area tournament to be run by the Tiger Woods Foundation. The event will be AT&T's second sponsorship on the PGA Tour, joining the event formerly known as the Bing Crosby Pro-Am. AT&T also sponsored a Michael Redd bobblehead promotion in Milwaukee last night. Let's see, they now have their name on at least a half-dozen stadiums and arenas, some sort of signage in virtually every pro and college arena, and even their logo on the headsets of half the college football coaches in America - what else do they want???

PISTONS VET GETS 10-GAME BAN: The NBA gets in the banned substance news for a day as back-up point guard Lindsey Hunter is banned ten-games for taking a dietary supplement which is listed as a steroid or performance-enhancing drug under the league's Anti-Drug program. Saying it was one of his wife's pills and a boneheaded mistake, Hunter says 'I just hope people don't think I'm out smoking marijuana. Actually he probably wouldn't had been suspended for as long if it was weed. The ban will cost Hunter $202,000.

MATTHEWS COULD BE SUSPENDED 80 GAMES, OR GET OFF: Yeah, this is not going away any time soon. If Matthews did indeed buy HGH from an Alabama pharmacy, he could face an 80-game suspension. Or there is a loophole where Matthews could avoid MLB punishment altogether through an immunity deal in which MLB officials would not directly participate.
