Top 50 drivers ranked in KACSPORTS exclusive 2007 Fantasy NASCAR Preview. KANSAS EMERGES AS TOP TITLE CONTENDER: You can say the Jayhawks are flying under the radar anymore. In an unique poll that asks voters to vote for one team being more likely to win the title than another - Kansas comes out tops with a 76 percent 'approval rating'. They are followed by North Carolina, Florida, UCLA, Georgetown, Ohio St., Texas A&M, Oregon, Memphis, USC, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, UNLV, Southern Illinois, Butler, and finally Vanderbilt at 23 percent. You can stare down the entire field here. CHASING 63-0... You think it can be done - especially considering this has not been an upset marred tournament. But in the 43rd game completed the final entry of approximately 1.7 million brackets that were filled out for Yahoo's NCAA game got it's first round got it's first loss when second-seeded Wisconsin lost to #7 UNLV. Play opened today with five 40-0 brackets, three of them going down when #4 Virginia fell to #5 Tennessee. The fourth bracket hit the rails when Purdue did not upset top-seeded Florida. The biggest hit for many brackets may have occurred late in the day when USC blew out Texas. BLUFFTON BASEBALL TO PLAY ON: Bluffton University will play baseball this season despite the deaths of five players who died when the team bus toppled off an A-T-L overpass. The Beavers began practicing Monday and their first game is scheduled for March 31. The team plans on wearing all black uniforms to honor the five players lost in the crash. WAS CASH GRAB BEHIND CHARGERS UNIFORM SWITCH??? Surprisingly, the franchise ranked among the top-five in apparel sales last year - during the 1990's and into this decade, the Chargers ranked among the bottom in merchandise sales. It is said the team's recent success along with the marketing of the alternate powder blue uniforms was responsible for the dramatic sales increase. Reviews of the recent logo and uniform redesign remain mixed, with some actually dissapointed that the dark blue helmets are being ditched. All 32 NFL franchises basically share in merchandise revenue, although the team-operated Pro Shops typically run at the stadium is able to take in a higher rake. NEWS STORY - SADDAM AIDE SENT TO THE GALLOWS: Incidentally, catch the Youtube link on top of Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissie talking about childhood classmate Saddam Hussain, and how he thought pro wrestling was real!!! Executioners took out extra precautions after a hanging earlier this year that saw the hangee lose his head in Blackjack Ketchum fashion. This time they just decided to Roberta Flack him, killing him softly - with this noose, killing him softly, through the trap door - killing him softly, um, um-um um-um-um. BUSCH STADIUM GOES SMOKELESS: Becomes 15th park to go completely smokeless (surprised it's not 30 of 30 at this point). GEORGE KARL SON BEING TREATED FOR CANCER: Boise State basketball player Coby Karl, son of NBA coach George Karl, will undergo surgery to treat cancer next month. Karl was found to have cancerous lymph nodes, which will be removed after he plays in an All-Star game at the end of the month. It will be the second surgery in 13 months for Karl, who had a thyroid removed last March after being diagnosed with papillary carcinoma. RAPE AT NFL PLAYERS HOUSE INVESTIGATED: Maybe now I see Ted Thompson's logic, as for the second time in as many days an NFL team is wondering what they have just gotten into with a player they signed, as Atlanta police are investigating a woman's claim that she was raped at the home of former Falcons (now Seahawks) defensive end Patrick Kerney. A 29-year-old woman says she and some friends were at a bar in Atlanta's trendy Buckhead area and accepted a ride home from three men, and were invited inside for driniks. The woman told police she fell asleep on a sofa and woke up to find one of the men raping her. In a statement, Kerney said an assault had happened at this house while he was asleep, but will not comment further at this time. Kearney recently signed a 6 year/$39.5 million contract with Seattle. ANOTHER BAD KITTY ARRESTED: Notice the Jaguars have been acting a lot like Bengals lately??? Safety Gerald Sensabaugh was arrested just after midnight Monday morning in Tennessee after being clocked doing 86 in a 55 and having two loaded clips in the car. When are they going to learn, if you're packing heat then don't do 85 on the freeway, it's only a matter of time before you're nailed. Not surprisingly, Gerald's agent isn't saying anything. 26,752 WATCH SYRACUSE IN NIT: Any more questions on my theory why Syracuse got 'snubbed' from the NCAA despite blowing out Georgetown by 14 in a February game. In a pairing that sounds more like a mid-December tune-up than a post-season affair, Syracuse throttles San Diego St. in the Carrier Dome 80-64. But at least the Aztecs got to experience an authentic college basketball atmosphere. Now how much would that game had drawn in San Diego??? 4,000, 5,000 maybe - or how much if it was Marquette hosting an NIT game on a Monday night. I should also add that the SU fans braved a wind-driven sleet to get to the game. Meanwhile another sellout crowd watched Kansas St. (another team that I believe got left out of the big dance to be an NIT draw) fall to DePaul in another second round matchup. Memo to Syracuse and Kansas St. fans, if you don't want to see your team snubbed again, BOYCOTT THE NIT GAMES!!! MARIST FOXES IN SWEET 16: Are you bummed by the lack of stunning upsets in the men's NCAA tournament??? Then check out #13 seed Marist in the woman's West Regionals. Fresh off finishing the job on #4 Ohio State (which is more than Xavier can say) the other night, the Red Foxes (yes, that's their name) throttle Middle Tennessee 73-59 to become just the third #13 seed ever to advance to the Round of 16. I'd like to say Marist can keep it up in the regionals, but their next opponent in all probability will be Tennessee, good luck with that. Meanwhile there was perhpas an even bigger upset in the nightcap as #10 Florida St. rallies to stun second-seeded Stanford on their home court. Incredibly that is not the most stunning loss Stanford has seen on their home court, as the Cardinal have the indiginity of being the only #1 seed in men's or woman's tourney ever to lose to a #16 seed, falling to Harvard in 1998.FOUR OT CLASSIC IN NAIA TOURNEY: Proving that there is truly post-season drama in all levels of collegiate basketball, 5'8" Terrence Worthy twice forces extra overtimes before Concordia (CA) outlasted Robert Morris 122-119 in a NAIA semi-final. The loss deprived Robert Morris a chance at having the first undefeated season in NAIA competition since 1992. NHL SAYS TOODLE-OO TO TOOTOO FOR FIVE GAMES: The NHL handed Nashville Predators tough guy Jordin Tootoo a five-game suspension on Monday, calling the punch (with his glove still on) that knocked out Dallas Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas an overreaction to Robidas' threatening charge. You don't like seeing people get hurt, but if you look at the replay it looks like self defense - Tootoo got a four minute double-minor on the play. Robidas The incident overshadowed Mike Modano's milestone of becoming the #1 U.S. born goal scorer in NHL history. Modano scored about a minute after Robidas was wheeled off the ice. The home-standing Predators did not make mention of the historic moment, further angering the Stars organization.HIT ME - NFL PLAYERS GO AT IT IN VEGAS CASINO!!! Ex-Steelers linebacker Joey Porter (6'3" 250) has been cited for of punching Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman Levi Jones (6'5" 307) after police said the players exchanged trash talk at a casino blackjack table. The LVPD cited an initial report that the two players had a history of on-field trash talking with each other from their respective teams divisional clashes. With Joey recently signing with the Miami Dolphins, the two will unfortunately be seeing less of each other. THE 'I-KILLED-A-DOG' - MUSHER DQ'D FOR ABUSING DOGS: Two-time runner-up Ramy Brooks was disqualified from the Iditarod after it was reported that he spanked his dogs, one of which died before the end of the race. According to a race marshal, the 38-year-old Brooks hit each of his 10 dogs with a trail marking lathe, similar to a surveyor’s stake, after two refused to get up and continue running. Witnesses reported the incident to race marshals. One of the dogs named Kate, a three-year old female, wound up dead after Brooks arrived at the final checkpoint before Nome, 90 miles to the end of the 1,100 mile race. To no suprise, PETA is already over this, with a spokesperson saying 'I’m sure they’re exhausted and sick of the whole thing. When is enough going to be enough with this event? There is no way to do this humanely. No one who has any feelings for dogs should condone this event, or could possibly think it’s acceptable.'BASEBALL/POKER STAR VOWS TO BEAT DIABETES: Padres pitcher David Wells, 43, revealed he's been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, the adult onset version of the disease. Saying he doesn't want his disease to morph into Type 1, Wells says he's already taken major lifestyle changes, including no more starches, fast food, or alcohol. Wells also says he has also battled high blood pressure and cholesterol in recent years. David admits that he's been struggling with the new regimen, and has been sluggish during spring training. Symptoms of the disease include fatigue, increased thirst, increased urination, increased appitite, fatigue, and erectile dysfunction - although the disease can develop with no symptoms at all. According to medical experts, diabetes can lead to problems involving the eyes, heart, blood vessels, nerves and kidneys. DRUDGE STORY - HIGH SCHOOL HOOPS RIOT IN NYC!!! Turning March Madness into just madness period, all hell breaks loose at the NYC Public High School championship game inside Madison Square Garden on Sunday night. The fight eventually spilled into the Times Square district - with shots ringing out at least once. Video footage shows hundreds of fans fighting in the stands with NYPD trying to restore order to no avail. Preliminary reports have 15 arrests so far. The entire episode started on the court after a hard foul when several players started shoving each other. That ignited the trouble in the stands, and at one point the PA announcer said on the mike What the (bleep) is wrong with y'all? Come on!' Guess these teams will be playing in empty gyms next year. ANOTHER BOO-BOO FOR GOLFER: Golfer Boo Weekley, who lost the Honda Classic after blowing a three-foot putt a few weeks back, found himself in another bizarre situation at the Bay Hill Classic which ended up adding two strokes to his round-low 67 on Saturday. Weekley's partner was pitching from the fringe on the other side of the green, and it appeared that the ball may have a shot at going in. Unfortunately, that golfers caddie biffed and was not tending to the flag, which would had resulted in a two-stroke penalty. So Boo ends up running over and pulls the pin himself before the ball arrives. That ended up being a R.O.G violation, someone in the gallery asked a rules official about it, and Boo ends up with a two-stroke penalty for trying to bail out his partner. DURANT TALKING ABOUT CARMELO-TYPE RUN: As of 6:55 PM ET, doesn't sound like that will happen. Incidentally, Celtics GM Danny Ainge has been fined 30K for hanging around Durant like a cheap suit. BUTLER DID IT!!! Horizon League does it again as Strawberry turnovers lead to Maryland loss. LUCKEYES PULL ONE-OUTER, WIN IN OT: Xavier had to miss free throw, Ohio State had to come down the floor and hit three-pointer, then somehow win in overtime WITHOUT Greg Oden. In other words there was only one card in the deck that could beat Xavier. Guess what, the Buckeyes pulled it out - and advance to Sweet 16 for first time since 1999. Actually Ohio St. was not in the Sweet 16 in 1999, there may even be grainy footage of a Final Four appearance that year, but according to the NCAA that never happened - maybe just in some parallel universe that didn't notice their recruiting violations. But no one has come to shake me down for my tourney pool winnings that year. Meanwhile after just getting by(u) in the last round, this bitter loss at the hands of Thad Matta stings like a knife in the back for Xavier's seniors - recruited by Matta four years earlier. LOUISVILLE FOUGHT LAW AND LAW WON: Texas A&M survives Edgar Sosa, raucous Louisville crowd, escape Lexington with first Sweet 16 berth since 1980. DOUBLE (OT) SHOT OF VANDY: Vanderbilt survives foul trouble, late deficit, to eventually down Washington St. in instant classic.MOSS TRADE WOULD BE 'PERFECT MOVE': Making several of the points I made in yesterday's blog - writer notes that Moss trade would be a 'marriage made for Lambeau Field'. RYAN HOLLWEG DOESN'T WANT TO PRESS CHARGES: But Nassau County prosecutors could still proceed against Islanders 'tough guy' Chris Simon for his now infamous stick attack to Hollweg's face. Meanwhile Simon remains suspended for the longest violence related suspension in terms of games in leauge history - 25 games, or whenever the Islanders are eliminated from the playoffs, whichever comes last. It marks the sixth suspension of Simon's career. BOB FELLER RIPS BUSH, IRAQ WAR: At age 88, he's still kicking and not mincing words. When asked about the Iraq war, Rapid Robert had this to say, We should have gone in there with 450,000 troops, half with guns and half for support. We should have said, 'We're going to take your oil, we're going to give you the going price and we're going to set up martial law. You are going to do what we tell you, like we did in Japan after World War II. And if you don't do what we tell you to do, you may not be around tomorrow.' While saying he voted for George Bush, Feller also says he does not have much use for the current President, saying 'he would had been a good president of a college, but that's it'. Feller also had choice words for Pete Rose, a frequent target of his, noting that he will 'never get in the Hall of Fame'. (Don't need Nancy Drew to figure out that one). The former Cleveland Indians ace and World War II hero has been known for his outspokeness in recent years, including criticizing baseball for honoring Muhammad Ali (because he dodged the draft) at the All-Star game a couple years back.KOBE DRIVES 65: The NBA actually manages to upstage a lackluster NCAA tournament for at least one day, as Kobe Bryant goes off for 65 points as the Lakers break a seven-game losing streak with an overtime victory over Portland. Kobe scored 33 of the 65 points after the third period. The output is the second-highest of Kobe's career, only trailing his legendary 81-point effort v. Toronto last year. CHINESE PROSPECT TOUTED AS POSSIBLE #1 OVERALL NBA PICK: That would be over Greg Oden, Kevin Durant, etc. - His name is Yi Jianlian, and will be on display in the best-of-five China Basketball Association playoff finals. Yi averaged 25.5 points and nearly 12 rebounds per game in the regular season - and he and Yao Ming are both expected to anchor China's Olympic team on it's home turf in next years Olympics. RUGBY PLAYER BANNED FOR LIFE: Earlier this week, Trevor Brennan announced his retirement from rugby. But it turns out that he really didn't need to do that, as the European Rugby Cup has banned him for life after punching a fan earlier this year. During a game his team won 28-13, Trevor went into the stands and railed a fan right in the jaw - Trevor says that fans were saying things about his mother and were dousing him with beer, always a good excuse to climb into the stands and throw away your career. Let's hope that unlike Ron Artest, that he at least got the right customer. Brennan was also fined $33,250 and forced to pay the fan $6,650 in restitution. On the plus side, if MLR is ever organized in the United States perhaps he can play in that. By the way Trevor, your mom thought what you did was stupid. AT&T SUING TO GET ON BURTON CAR: This should surprise absolutely no one. Telecommunications 'giant' (that's the press copy) AT&T plans to sue NASCAR after racing series officials would not let the company put its logo on Jeff Burton's Cingular race car. As I'm sure everyone knows, AT&T has bought on Cingular, but NASCAR will not allow what they consider a different telecommunications company have sponsorship in the Nextel (soon to be Sprint) Cup Series. Although Cingular remains on the #31 car, AT&T has bought time on Cup races - with frequent references (while showing the #31) that Cingular is now the new AT&T. If you're counting at home, AT&T's sponsorship is on four stadiums and arenas, three golf tournaments, a college bowl game, the Texas/Oklahoma football game, and even a Formula One team. And we haven't even gotten to AT&T At the Half yet. This will be a heavyweight battle.NFL PLAYER FINDS SELF IN MIDDLE OF NYC GUNFIRE: Just another quiet Friday morning in Greenwich Village. Giants linebacker Brandon Short was in a jewelry store when a gunfight breaks out at a shop next door - an incident that saw a gunman kill two volunteer policeman and a pizza shop worker before being taken down himself by the NYPD. |
