NFL DRAFT PROSPECT IN BAD TRAFFIC WRECK: Former LSU receiver Demetrius Byrd said to be in intensive care after what being involved in what was said to be a serious car accident in Miami over the weekend - no other details have been released.. A member of LSU's 2007 National Championship team, Byrd has been projected as a 4th or 5th round draft pick in this coming weekend's NFL draft.

HORROR - 21 HORSES DIE BEFORE POLO TOURNAMENT IN FLA: Two of the horses collapsed while being unloaded from the trailer, while several others became dizzy and disoriented. It's now being reported that all 21 horses that were sickened have now died. The horses were among 60 owned by the same team, it is believed the horses were poisoned somehow, possibly from tainted feed. It is not believed that any horses from any of the other teams were affected, and the tournament is expected to resume during the week.

TODAY'S NATINALS PR DEBACLE: The team benches and fines OF Elijah Dukes for committing the red rule violation of showing up five minutes late at the ballpark, it was said that Dukes was signing autographs at a Little League function. The team also warned Dukes that if it happens again that he would be optioned to triple-A. Says the Natinals manager, 'We are going to change the culture here, regardless of how well a guy is playing'. Hopefully Elijah really was signing for Little Leaguers, because he does have a bit of a prior history - and was also late showing up for a game last August. Dukes did eventually get into the game after the starter broke his leg. The karma continues in DC.

ADENHART MERCHANDISE BLOCKED BY MLB??? This would not be surprising, word is that anyone trying to buy a personalized Adenhart 34 jersey or T-shirt on MLB's website is not allowed to do so. But you have to look at MLB's side of it - let's say the sales were allowed, and Adenhart is amongst the top-selling jerseys/merchandise, MLB would not look good at profiting on a player's tragedy. I think somewhere down the line there will be some sort of resolution that would allow for the sales of Adenhart jerseys and T-shirts - the NFL did eventually allow for the sale of Pat Tillman related merchandise.

CRICKET MATCH BREAKS OUT AT YANKEE STADIUM: But Cleveland falls just short of recording the century in the second inning. The stadium is only three regular season games old, but the Yankee pitching staff has already stunk the new ballpark smell out of it. Fresh off giving up nine runs in an inning the other day, Cleveland now racks up a '14' spot in the second inning to display on the manual scoreboard. The 14 runs are a new MLB record for runs scored in the second inning - breaking the previous record (13) last done by the Yankees four years ago today. The outburst also represents Cleveland's biggest inning since 1950. The half-inning lasted 37 minutes and 69 pitches were thrown. The good news is the Yanks still have their bullpen stopper Nick Swisher ready for the ninth.

NO 'O' AND NO 'W'S': We could just stop at Saying that the Washington Natinals took it on the chin again today and fell to 1-9 on the season. What - you're saying I just mis-spelled their name??? Well last night Adam Dunn and Ryan Zimmerman, the team's two most relevant offensive players, took to the field with jerseys saying 'Natinals'. Considering how many jerseys are sold on a retail basis as well as the team itself, that is a total lack of attention to detail. And this is the same organization that signed a supposedly 'stud' prospect last year who turned out to be an impostor under a different name. From the just-resigned GM to the team itself all the way down to the equipment manager, this franchise is a joke all the way around.

MARTIN BIRON JUST LOST HIS LIQUOR LICENSE: Bill Guerin scores in overtime, Penguins take 2-0 lead in series. Get out of the fast lane Grandma, THIS BINGO GAME IS READY TO ROLL!!!

UMPIRE HAS GRUDGE AGAINST MILT-DOWN: If you don't think for a second that MLB umpires really don't have a vendetta against controversial right fielder Milton Bradley, then you didn't see the last two strikes called by umpire Larry Vanover the other day, who I guess was going to call a strike on anything in the 312 Area Code. Now Bradley is facing possible suspension for his helmet allegedly coming in contact with Vanover in the quick, but explosive argument that followed. Yes you can argue that Milt has created this hole himself with his conduct over the years, but I say the umps are a bit un-professional as well, it really seemed like Vanover got a thrill out of calling Milt out, then ejecting him so he can fly off the handle for the 900th time.

POCKET ACES: Shouldn't this be worth automatic graduation to the big show??? Brendon Todd makes history by acing the 17th home on consecutive days in a Nationwide Tour event - the first time that has occurred in the 20 year history of that series. The last time any player recorded two hole-in-one's on the same hole in the same tournament was Graham Marsh in the 2004 Senior British Open. There is said to have been five occasions where players recorded hole-in-one's twice in one event in PGA Tour history - on two occasions the aces were in the same round.

NFL ALLOWS JETS TO CHANGE START TIME FOR GAME: Jets were slated by the league to start home game at 4:15 PM on September 27, which would have been in conflict for fans of the Jewish since Yom Kippur starts at sun-down that night. After hearing the teams request, the league has decided to allow for that game to now start at 1:00 PM. As a result both New York teams will be playing in separate games at the same time, which the league usually tries to avoid. Also under normal circumstances the league does not allow a telecast of another game when a game is being played in a team's home market. The league will make an exception in this case, both the Jets and Giants games will be televised in the New York market that day.

NFL PROSPECT FACING FACEBOOK BACKLASH: The story is actually two years old, but with the NFL Draft now just a week away and prospects being looked over with a fine-tooth comb, the episode is getting new legs. In what was considered an 'inside joke', linebacker Clay Matthews created a group called White Nation, in which fellow NFL prospect Brian Cushing, along with three other teammates and upwards to 90 members overall, eventually joined. It is said the group was created because a black player on the Trojans referred to Matthews and the other four players as 'white nation'. On the site, a picture of a black baby was shown, suggesting that African-Americans be arrested before they could become criminals. The website eventually caused controversy on the USC campus, and Matthews eventually took his name off the site - but it still exists in the name of a non-USC person, it's said the site is now used to 'educate' the public about the evils of racism. Matthews eventually wrote a formal apology upon leaving the group, while an African-American player on the USC squad defended the players. During last football season, a player was kicked off the University of Texas team after writing a slur indicating that Barack Obama's election would be bad news for hunters in the form of increased gun control. Another problem that has cropped up recently involving current pro athletes as well as potential professional prospects are sites claiming to be from the athlete making misrepresentations.

TODAY'S PROOF THAT NORMAN IS THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE: Defending champion Oklahoma leads a 12-school field that will decide the men's gymnastics title this weekend in Minneapolis. The Sooners have won eight titles, come into the finals with the second-best regional qualifying score. Steven Legendre is the defending NCAA champion in vault and floor exercise, and will lead OU's title defense.

DANNY AINGE SUFFERS 'MINOR' HEART ATTACK: Celtics GM skipped teams regular season finale because he wasn't feeling well - then woke up the next morning with chest pains. Before contributing to the Celtics championship teams in the 1980's, Ainge was a two-sport star, being voted as college basketball's top player while also playing in the Toronto Blue Jays fam system, playing in 211 MLB games.

MISSING BIG TICKET ITEM - GARNETT 'NOT LIKELY' FOR PLAYOFFS: Coach Doc Rivers says nothing is official, but does not see Garnett returning at any point during the playoffs. The Celtics were 18-7 without Garnett the final two months of the season, and open the playoffs as the Eastern Conference's #2 seed, and would open a potential conference final v. Cleveland on the road, an already tough task that becomes even more difficult without Garnett.

EVIL EMPIRE TO EVIL EMPIRE??? Actually in the past I thought of Jeff Smardjiza going from Notre Dame to the Chicago Cubs was the ultimate evil daily double, until now. Former Duke guard Greg Paulus worked out for the Green Bay Packers earlier in the week, but is also considering an offer to transfer to the University of Michigan, a move that smacks of desperation on part of the Michigan program. Paulus' eligibility is exhausted in basketball, but does have one year of eligibility in any other sport. Some think the only thing more evil than going from Duke to Michigan would be to transfer from Duke to Notre Dame. Actually I can think of even better, Paulus plays quarterback at Michigan, but also moonlights on the baseball team and ends up getting drafted by the Yankees. Paulus takes the Yankees bonus money and stays in their system for a few years, then decides again that his heart says he should be a quarterback, then signs with the Dallas Cowboys.

MAN SUES OVER GOD BLESS AMERICA: Guess this man's enlarged prostate hit at the wrong time during a Yankees game last August. The man is suing the Yankees and NYC, saying he was kicked out of the stadium after attempting to make a bathroom run while God Bless America was going to be played. The man claims his arm was twisted by one officer, and other officers 'marched' him down the ramps, then was pushed out the door with an officer suggesting that if he don't like dem apples he can 'leave the country'. Red rule violation gone overboard perhaps?? NYPD's version of the story is much different saying the man was swearing and reeking of alcohol. The ejected fan, who says he and a friend were quietly enjoying the game, is said to be a director of web publications for a media company, and does admit that he objects to being forced to participate in open displays of patriotism. It is said that the Yankees have a policy in which security and ushers block off exits while God Bless America is being played. A NYC ACLU director proclaims other fans have had concern about the policy, saying it's 'patriotism being imposed on people on a mass scale'. MLB instituted God Bless America being played insted of 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame' in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks. The song is a personal favorite of Bud Selig, who had it played during special occasions at Milwaukee Brewer games long before 9/11. Most MLB venues play God Bless America on Sundays, holidays, Opening Day, playoff games, and other special occasions - but is a fixture during all Yankees games.

JOHN MADDEN RETIRES FROM NFL BROADCASTING: His legacy from coaching the Raiders in the 1970's was nothing to sneeze at, but to the more recent generation, Madden is much more widely known for his 30-year braodcasting career that saw him eventually work for four different networks, and helping develop the now-legendary Madden video game series. Madden took his own voice off the game commentary of Madden 2009 last year, with Cris Collinsworth becoming the game analyst, one can only hope Collinsworth does not replace him in the real booth as well.

ANOTHER VOICE GONE IN BROADCASTING WORLD: Merle Harmon dies at age 82 in Arlington, TX. The veteran broadcaster called games for many teams in MLB and pro football over the years, along with network assignments. Harmon was voice of the Milwaukee Braves in 1964-65 and went on to do radio for the Brewers from 1970-1979. Harmon's tenure with the Brewers ended in 1980 when the team would not give him permission to work the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow - which never aired on NBC due to the U.S. boycott of the games. Harmon was also voice of the New York Jets in the Joe Namath era, and was behind the mike on the radio for Super Bowl III, one of the most momentous events in sports history.

TOO REALISTIC - PEDROIA FAMILY THREATENED: 47 year-old California man arrested for making numerous telephone threats to the family of reigning AL MVP Dutin Pedroia. The Pedroia clan have not been popular lately in Woodland, CA after Dustin referred to the area as a 'dump' in a magazine over the weekend. Also older brother Brett Pedroia is facing child molestation charges.

SHOCKER - HARRY KALAS FOUND DEAD IN BROADCAST BOOTH: Iconic baseball and football announcer is dead at age 73, apparently while doing pre-game preparation in the press box at Washington Nationals Stadium. Kalas' passing was announced on the Phillies TV network upon coming on the air and was honored by the Nationals at their home opener with a moment of silence. The emotion of the day was clearly evident on the Phillies, as Shane Victorino pointed towards the press box after hitting a home run in Philadelphia's 9-8 win. Kalas' career was punctuated by calling the final out of the Phillies 2008 World Series win, Kalas did not call the Phils 1980 World Series victory because local radio broadcasts were not allowed by MLB in those days. Kalas became the team's play-by-play voice in 1971, but it was years before his voice won over and eventually became legendary with the Phillies fan base. On a national level Kalas is perhaps better known for his work with NFL Films, succeeding former Philadelphia newscaster John Facenda upon his passing in 1984. The son of a Methodist minister in Illinois, Kalas' career started as the voice of University of Hawaii athletics in 1961, Kalas also announced Notre Dame football during the early years of cable TV. The Phillies are planning on continuing their series in Washington, but have canceled a scheduled off-day trip to the White House where the team was to be honored for the 2008 Championship.

ANOTHER SHOCKER - MARK FIDRYCH DEAD AT 54: Was found dead under a pick-up truck he was apparently working on. While not a household name to younger baseball fans, Fidrych quickly became a baseball icon in 1976 with his zany antics while winning AL Rookie of the Year award. Despite not making his first start until mid-May, Fidrych went 19-9 with an unheard of (by today's standards) 24 complete games. Fidrych became a national phenomenon during a nationally televised Monday night game against the Yankees (recently shown on MLB Network) and soon after was named the AL's starting pitcher for that years All-Star game. Fidrych quickly became known as 'The Bird' due to his resemblance to the Sesame Street character Big Bird as well as his other quirks such as talking to the baseball and smoothing out the pitchers mound before an inning. Despite a public outcry, Fidrych also refused to be paid more than the MLB minimum salary. Fidrych injured his knee during 1977 Spring Training shagging flies in the outfield - although he soon returned and was initially as effective as during the '76 season, Fidrych soon suffered a torn rotator cuff, an injury that was not diagnosed until years later and effectively ended his career. After retiring, Fidrych returned to a quiet life of farming and trucking in his native Massachusetts, while making occasional appearances in Old-Timers games and other functions.

KYLE BUSCH NOT HAPPY WITH AUTOGRAPH HAWKERS: Think that commercial shown during races featuring the robotic 'driver seeker', with Kyle Busch being drugged and flown to some kids house who wants his autograph, is that far off base??? Kyle loses in the final laps to Joey Logano in a back-and-forth tussle in a Nationwide Series race in Nashville over the weekend. After the race, Kyle sounded upset with reporters and in particular was not happy with some pushy fans. In an attempt to improve the live gate, the speedway did a promotion that gave season-ticket holders access to the drivers before the race. Kyle says he was hounded by autograph seekers camped outside his hauler carrying 'suitcases' full of die-casts. At least Kyle didn't leave his car parked in Turn 3 after the race for his crew to drag back.

GIANTS RELIEVER HOSPITALIZED AFTER BEING DOTTED WITH LINER: After seeing something like this one wonders why facial protection has never been discussed for MLB pitchers. San Francisco's Joe Martinez takes a wicked liner off the bat of Milwaukee's Mike Cameron in the ninth inning on Thursday, with Cameron visibly shaken after pulling into second base. Martinez walked off the field under his own power, but is expected to be hospitalized for several days with what has been diagnosed as a concussion as well as what is characterized as three small facial fractures. The team is hopeful that Martinez will make a full recovery.

LANCE BELIEVES HE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN TDF: Armstrong reporting on his website that he believes he will not be allowed on the Tour, as he feels the French testing agency will bust him for not submitting to blood, urine, and hair samples in a timely matter while Lance's people verified the testers credentials. Lance the dispute will continue to escalate and that there will be more 'antics' from the French Anti-Doping industry in the future. Lance says this was the 24th time he had been tested out of competition since announcing his comeback last Semptember.

WORLD CUP COMING TO A STADIUM NEAR YOU??? Could it possibly happen - in June 2022 could we see England's famed national soccer team playing in a World Cup - at Lambeau Field??? Or how about Argentina and Cameroon doing battle in the shadows of the Wasatch Mountains at LaVelle Edwards Stadium?? What about Italy and Ecuador where Sam Bradford currently racks up TD passes?? The U.S. Soccer Federation has released a list of 70 potential venues should the United States host the 2018 or 2022 World Cup. The good news is that a current NFL or major college football venue near you is on the list. Included are NFL sites such as Lambeau Field, Seattle's Qwest Field, as well as the Oakland Coliseum and San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium - which likely have dates with the wrecking ball long before the next World Cup hits the U.S.. There are also many stadiums on the list that are well known from the college football world, including venues on the campuses of Alabama, LSU, Ohio St. (the Horseshoe), Iowa, Wisconsin (Camp Randall) and Arkansas. Now the bad news, most of these locations are long-shots, as it will mostly likely be stadiums in major markets that will be among the 9-12 eventual World Cup venues. Also since soccer fields are much wider than U.S. football fields, many U.S. stadiums do not meet the criteria - for instance it's said that Lambeau Field can be expanded to a width of 67 yards tops for soccer, a regulation field is 75 yards wide.

ANGELS ROOKIE NICK ADENHART KILLED IN CAR CRASH: Pitcher and two other people were killed early Thursday when a minivan ran a red light and struck their sports car which ended up going into a light pole, a fourth person who was in the sports car is in critical condition. The minivan driver attempted to flee the scene but was caught a short time later and is expected to be charged with felony hit-and-run. The 22-year old Adenhart had made his fourth career major league start against Oakland earlier in the evening, pitching six scoreless innings. Adenhart becomes the third fatality of an active MLB player during the season in recent years, joining Darryl Kile (heart condition, 2002) and Josh Hancock (car accident, 2007). The Angels are supposed to play the final game of their four-game series v. Oakland tonight, no word as of yet whether that game will be rescheduled.

FROM 4/8 GAME RECAP: From MLB.COM - 'What Adenhart accomplished shouldn't have been cast in the background (the Angels later lost the game), for it was a brilliant effort by a 22-year-old right-hander making his fourth Major League start. It was more than premium stuff - mid-90s fastball, big curve, darting changeup - from Adenhart. He showed his resolve, intelligence and adaptability in his season debut, repeatedly pitching out of jams across six scoreless innings.' The strong season debut came on the heels of a very strong spring training where it was said that Adenhart had improved tremendously.
