TOP STORIES - JUNE 25, 2009 KACSPORTS FANTASY FOOTBALL 2009: Bigger than ever, 55 quarterbacks ranked... COLD DAY IN... - U.S. SOCCER BEATS #1 RANKED TEAM: Is the heat getting to you??? Then cool off with a trip to South Africa, where in Lambeau-like conditions (it's the first week of winter down there) heavily favored Spain put their 35 match unbeaten streak on the line against the United States in the Confederations Cup semi-final. Despite being out-shot 29-9 (29 shots sounds NHL-like), the U.S. wins 2-nil, with an early Jozy Altidore goal setting the tone. The U.S. now advances to the final of a major international competition for the first time ever - not like anyone in the States cares. Is this a signal to the world that the U.S. is now a factor in world football??? Let's just say they had a good night - it's one game. SHOCKER - PROMINENT HS COACH GUNNED DOWN IN IOWA: A former student and football player is in custody after fatally shooting legendary prep football coach Ed Thomas in a weight room at his high school in rural Parkersburg, IA - the 24-year old is charged with first-degree murder. Reports said Thomas was shot multiple times at point blank range, including once in the head. School was not in session, but it was said that about 30 people were in the facility including several in the weight room. It's said that no one else in the building was targeted in the attack. It's said that the suspect was supposed to be admitted to a psychiatric ward this week after leading police on a high-speed chase over the weekend. The well-respected Thomas compiled a career record of 292-84 in 37 seasons, and was honored in 2005 as NFL High School Coach of the Year. Four of his former players are currently in the NFL, including Aaron Kampman (Packers), Brad Meester (Jaguars), Jared DeVries (Lions) and Casey Wiegmann (Broncos). It's reported that a shaken Jared DeVries walked off the field during Detroit's practice upon hearing the news. Parkersburg is a town of about 2,000 that was leveled by a F5 Tornado last year, destroying the high school. Shortly after, Thomas insisted that the football field that bears his name be rebuilt to restore community pride. The last case of a prep football coach being targeted occurred in 2005, when a Texas coach was shot by a parent whose son played on the team - the coach's son was the quarterback on that team. That coach survived. RCR CUTTING FROM FOUR TO TWO TEAMS??? After expanding to four teams just this past year, Richard Childress has quickly found that more may not necessarily be better - with his four teams running 15th, 16th, 21st, and 25th (Kevin Harvick) in the point standings. Now, with the Childress organization as just one of many feeling the sting of GM's economic crisis, with the auto-maker owing RCR over $2.5 million per recent bankruptcy documents. RCR is among those speculated to be possibly scaling back for the 2010 season. EYE-OPENING STORY ON KOSAR'S STRUGGLES: Over the weekend I reported on Bernie Kosar's bankruptcy, caused by the combination of divorce, his restaurant going under, and a series of bad investments. This Dan Le Batard article goes further into Kosar's crumbling life - which features recent events such as one of Bernie's daughters having her car crashing into a lake and smashing an autographed guitar to chase a teenager (looking for one of Bernie's daughter) out of his house. It's said Kosar walks with a noticeable limp, partly the result of a game during his career in which he played through a broken ankle. Kosar adds that all his fingers had been broken during his career and he's received several concussions. Bernie says that his donations trying to help out former teammates after his career ended was in 'eight figures' along with his contributions to charitable organizations. Most alarming is that the man who graduated from the University of Miami in 2½ years is apparently unable to do things most take for granted - Kosar says he doesn't know how to wash clothes or iron a shirt, and his new girlfriend walked in one day to see him attempt to cut french bread WITH A SAW. Those who hear Kosar from various radio interviews these days also notice that he talks with a slur that didn't exist during his playing days. When his wife divorced him, she claimed that Kosar suffers 'from several addictions and also bizarre behavior' - Bernie has publicly denied being an alcoholic or drug user. Unfortunately, Kosar's struggles mirror all too many stories with what goes on with NFL players long after their playing career ends.HEARING FOOTSTEPS??? Ricky Barnes and Lucas Glover still five shots clear of the rest of the field early in the final round at Bethpage Black. But can they make it through 72??? The two appear to be starting to stumble as the likes of Phil (-2) and Tiger (EVEN) smell the blood. At one point Barnes was at -11, only the fourth player ever to reach double-figures under par at the U.S. Open. The final round is set to resume at 9 AM Eastern time, allowing enough time for an 18-hole playoff if necessary. ![]() W-T-F - STATIONS PRE-EMPTING U.S. OPEN COVERAGE??? This is why I'm actually happy when coverage of major sports events are shown on cable outlets such as ESPN - when it airs on network TV, then there's a chance that your local affiliate may screw you. NBC announced yesterday that coverage of the suspended second round of the U.S. Open would air at 10 AM Eastern Time - sounds good right??? Except when I turn my local affiliate (WTMJ-Milwaukee) on today - 'Qubo', or regularly scheduled Saturday morning cartoons, was airing - which I find unacceptable and Heidi-like. Any other markets getting the shaft (and I don't mean anything in Tiger's bag) on this??? And 2 PM Eastern currently sounds like just about the time play could very well be suspended again. I don't know - sounds like Saturday morning cartoons are pretty big in the eyes of local stations. Perhaps the outrage from parents would be greater than those from golf fans had golf aired - I don't know. It's also possible that the station has an iron-clad contract with Qubo. My point is plenty of stations air cartoons, only one is carrying our national golf championship, or golf's Super Bowl if you will. At the very worst my affiliate could air golf on it's secondary digital channel (it normally airs a continuous weather report). And this isn't the first time this happened - a few years back another local affiliate pre-empted the final of the World Match Play Championship (Tiger v. Davis Love) to air a syndicated Academy Awards 'pre-game show' featuring the red carpet entrances. Maybe everything trumps golf??? Incidentally, you can catch the NBC feed on ESPN.com, where Tiger is trying to make the cut-line, and will probably be done with his round by the time my wonderful affiliate picks up the coverage. FBI INVESTIGATING DIRK'S EX: FBI agents seize recordings of threatening jailhouse phone calls made by the ex-girlfriend (or 'finace' according to the woman) of Dirk Nowitzki, to the NBA player's attorney. The woman's prison phone calls allegedly contained threats as well as demands for money - with many of the phone calls made to the offices of Dirk's attorneys. The news of the FBI's involvement in the case comes as court documents surface3 indicating Dirk Nowitzki is seeking sole custody of the woman's unborn child, if it is proved that he is the father. Neither the attorneys for Nowitzki or the woman would comment on the reports, but Dirk's father is speaking in a German newspaper saying 'what comes over daily from America from this woman is almost like blackmail'MILLER PARK - FLOODED!!! Sustains significant flood damage during massive overnight storm that dropped four inches of rain on the area, leaving knee-deep water in the service (below the stands) level and also flooding the clubhouses, where the carpeting will need to be replaced. And more storms are blowing into town as I speak... U.S. OPEN - TO BE CONTINUED: Second round now underway at Bethpage Black until dusk - tomorrow's forecast calls for showers in the morning the clearing, and then the possibility of more showers in the afternoon, becoming likely by evening. Scattered showers are forecast for Sunday and Monday - the hope is two get through Round 2 and into Round 3 by the end of Saturday and possibly playing up to 36 holes on Sunday. Ticketholders from Thursday's 'washout' have been given the option of using their tickets on Monday should the tourney last that long - otherwise they would get a 50 percent refund. LATE/EARLY HAD HUGE ADVANTAGE: Late/early golfers (including Lefty and Mike Weir) averaged 72.87 for the first round - the 'early/late' wave, which includes Tiger Woods (+4) averaged 74.76, I think TW would have opted for playing his round on the Wii - Tiger will likely go 24 hours without being on the course - his first round completed at 10:56 AM.LIQUIDATION AT BERNIE'S: 'IS YOUR CREDIT CARD DEBT OUT OF CONTROL??? ARE YOU SICK OF THE OUTRAGEOUS FEES AND PENALTIES??? CAN YOU EVEN AFFORD THE MINIMUM MONTHLY PAYMENT???' OR 'RING, RING - THIS IS YOUR CREDIT CARD ISSUER - WE STILL CAN'T GET A HOLD OF YOU, THE NEXT CALL WILL BE FROM OUR LEGAL DEPARTMENT!!!' Never mind me, I've been listening to too many radio commercials. Anyways, add the name of Bernie Kosar to those who have had the rug pulled financially, as he has filed in a Miami court. Kosar lists assets between $1 million and $10 million and liabilities of between $10 million and $50 million. Kosar owes almost $1.5 million in 'unsecured debt' to the ClevE Browns, where he played for nine years. Kosar also owes his ex-wife $3 million as well as $725,000 to the owner of a Arena Football League team, as well as $9 million from the wonderful south Florida real estate market. The 45-year-old Kosar also got divorced two years ago and his steakhouse went out of business soon after. Kosar was also once a part-owner of the Florida Panthers NHL team and also talked about becoming part of the ownership group when the Browns returned to the NFL in 1999. PACKERS 'PUNT' QUESTIONS ABOUT FAVRE: Why shouldn't they - last time I checked Favre will not be part of Green Bay's roster in 2009. Current QB Aaron Rodgers says that if Favre actually does suit up for the Minnesota Vikings then he can come up with a 'good answer'. RYAN LEAF ARRESTED AT BORDER CROSSING!!! Was supposedly on his way to meeting the Thursday deadline for surrendering in Texas. Well, Leaf didn't make it past the Peace Arch - as the infamous former #2 overall draft pick was arrested by customs agents as soon as he attempted to cross into the U.S. from Canada. Leaf is expected to remain in the Bellingham, WA jail until an extradition hearing, then probably shipped back to Texas.BASEBALL PRODIGY TO SKIP FINAL TWO YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL: Stephen Strasburg has already become small potatos. After being billed as the greatest sports prodigy since LeBron James in a recent Sports Illustrated article, the father of prep catcher Bryce Harper says his son will skip his final two years of high school and use his GED to enroll in a Nevada community college. The move is said to be designed so the 16-year old Harper could be eligible for the 2010 Amateur Draft, with the Washington Nationals well on their way to earning their way to again holding the #4 overall pick. Although Caribbean players can be signed as free agents before the age of 18, their North American counterparts are forced to wait until their high school eligibility is complete - at which time they become eligible for the Amateur Draft. MOST WATCHED PUCKS GAME SINCE 1973: Game seven between Penguins and Red Wings drew an estimated eight million viewers - they say the biggest audience to watch an NHL game on U.S. television since game six of the finals between the Blackhawks and the Canadiens 36 years ago. Game seven earned an 8 share and a 4.3 rating, the highest for a game seven since New Jersey v. Anaheim in 2003. Worried about taking a possible hit in the ratings, NBC would not allow the Red Wings to broadcast game game six from Pittsburgh inside Joe Louis Arena for fear that the network would take a hit in the ratings. MOB SCENE IN LA AFTER LAKERS MAKE MAGIC DISAPPEAR: Hundreds celebrate outside Staples Center, with some revelers damaging police cruisers, throwing rocks and bottles at and setting off bonfires, forcing the LAPD to send in reinforcements while issuing a city-wide tacticle alert for gethering an unlawful assembly. Television footage revealed people jumping on a police cars, rocking vehicles, setting small trees on fire and throwing fireworks and flares set up by police. A gas station was looted while several cars, buses and a news van were vandalized.FAVRE SCHEDULED FOR JOE BUCK TV SHOW: Set to appear on first episode of 'Joe Buck Live', which is to air on HBO Monday night. The interview will be done live but it is not certain whether Favre will actually be in front of the New York studio audience in person or whether the interview will be done via satellite. GOLFER KEN GREEN STILL IN BAD SHAPE: More bad news for the Champions Tour golfer seriously injured in a RV crash that killed his brother, girlfriend, and beloved family dog, as his agent says his right leg will be amputated Monday. The agent says doctors will remove Green's leg after determining it would take two years of surgery before Green would have a chance to walk again. Green also needs surgery to repair damage to a suborbital bone in his face, and also has a six-inch long cut to the side of the head termed as 'troublesome'. The 1989 Ryder Cup member has earned $3.7 million during a controversial career marred by financial problems, mental illness, and run-ins with the PGA Tour. The agent says Green is using a goal of a potential return to the Tour with the help of the prosthetic limb to get through the ordeal. NASCAR'S JOHNNY BENSON IN BAD WRECK: The 2008 Truck Series Champion was initially listed in critical condition after a fiery wreck in a supermodified race Saturday night in his native Michigan. Benson's car went airborne after a collision, then slammed into the wall and erupted in flames during the event at a track where Benson is part-owner. According to reports, Benson sustained multiple injuries including burns and broken ribs, but is now listed as stable and is expected to recover. Benson lost his regular ride in the Truck Series just last week as his team was not able to get enough sponsorship. |
