COUNTDOWN TO COLLEGE FOOTBALL: This is an ongoing countdown of the Top-50 Division I teams heading into the 2007 season: #50 Central Michigan | #49 Kansas St. | #48 Arizona | #47 Cincinnati | #46 Michigan St. | #45 BYU | #44 Texas Tech | #43 Iowa | #42 Georgia Tech | #41 Wake Forest | #40 Purdue | #39 Maryland | #38 Kentucky | #37 Alabama | #36 Missouri | #35 Oklahoma St. | #34 Oregon St. | #33 TCU | #32 Oregon | #31 Notre Dame | #30 South Florida | #29 South Carolina | #28 Arizona St. | #27 Boise St. | #26 Clemson | #25 UCLA | #24 Arkansas | #23 Florida St. | #22 Texas A&M | #21 Hawaii | #20 Miami | #19 Rutgers KASEY KAHNE A BUD MAN??? Budweiser shopping around their best sponsorship option, an indication that that Budweiser will not sponsor Dale Earnhardt Jr. following the 2007 season. As reported on KACSPORTS yesterday it's expected that Pepsico will be Junior's new sponsor, likely rotating various Pepsi and Mountain Dew products. But Kahne and Budweiser does not sound like a likely pair, especially with the Evernham and Dodge programs both going backwards fast. The more viable option would be for Budweiser to stay with DEI with either Junior's replacement or Martin Truex. EVEN MORE TROUBLE FOR PACMAN: Already suspended NFL player receives SEVERAL driving citations in a traffic stop last month in Tennessee. Pacman was pulled over June 10 at 8:30 a.m. because the tags his orange Lamborghini sports car did not match. Deputies said he had switched the plate from another vehicle he owns. Pacman was cited with a registration violation, as well as a residency violation for having a Georgia license and failure to show proof of insurance. ALBERT PUJOLS STEAMED: Something does not add up in all of this. Tony LaRussa chooses to leave his own franchise player on the bench, the only position player not to see action for the National League, as LaRussa chose to leave Aaron Rowand in to bat with the bases loaded and two outs with the NL losing 5-4. Hmmm - who would you rather have bat in that situation, Pujols has played the outfield before, so the defense could had been rearranged had there been extra innings. Good thing the fans elected Prince Fielder, because if Pujols had started and Prince stayed on the bench - it would had been more than water coolers being broken. WSOP MAIN EVENT DOWN 28 PERCENT: After 14 consecutive years of increases, the WSOP Main Event predictibly experiences a drop in the face of no longer accepting satellite qualifiers from on-line sites. Many in the poker world would actually look at that as a good thing. However the turnout for the entire 55-event WSOP slate is actually up slightly from 2006. A logical guess would be that many decided to play in lower buy-in events in lieu of trying to qualify for the Main Event on-line. Many participants and on-lookers are also speaking out on last year's 'port bill' which crippled the on-line gaming industry, including a former senator as well as talk show host Montel Williams, who also said that he would donate any winnings to families affected by the war in Iraq. Montel was among the chip leaders early in Day 1, but quickly flamed out and was eliminated early in Day 2. RICK TOCCHET ADVANCES TO DAY 2!!! That would of course be the former NHL player and coach who is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to charges of conspiracy to promote gambling and is still officially on an indefinite leave of absence from the Phoenix Coytoes. Also competing was Operation Slap Shot partner Janet Jones, but Mrs. Gretzky wound up having a very brief stay. HORROR PLANE CRASH CLAIMS HUSBAND OF NASCAR EXEC: A small plane carrying the husband of a NASCAR executive crashed into two houses while trying to make an emergency landing, killing five people and starting fires that seriously burned three others. NASCAR confirmed that Dr. Bruce Kennedy, a Daytona Beach plastic surgeon and husband of ISC President Lesa France Kennedy, and NASCAR Aviation pilot Michael Klemm were among the dead. It's also said a woman, her husband and their 10-year-old son were burned and critically injured when the plane slammed into their home. Witnesses reported the child on fire and running. NASCAR'S LONG HISTORY WITH AIR DISASTERS: In 1970 racing legend Curtis Turner killed in crash en route to race in Charlotte. On April Fool's Day 1993 reigning Cup champion Alan Kulwicki is lost in a crash near Bristol, TN. Just three months later Davey Allison dies after crashing his helicopter at Talladega speedway. In 1998 Mark Martin loses his father, stepmother and half-sister after their private plane crashes in Nevada. In April 2002 owner Jack Roush clipped a power line with his vintage plane and crashed into a lake. Miraculously Roush survived thanks to quick action by a witness who managed to pull Roush out of the wreckage and revived him. Finally, in October 2004 ten people died when a Hendrick Motorsports plane crashed into a mountain en route to Martinsville speedway. Other sports have also dealt with air tragedies, over the years baseball has lost active players Cory Lidle, Thurman Munson, Roberto Clemente, and one-time promising Cubs second baseman Kenny Hubbs.HELLMUTH BAD BEAT WITH A RACE CAR!!! Well here's our Phil Hellmouth quick exit from the World Series of Poker Main Event story for this year. Except his getting busted out was not his only spectacular flameout for the weekend. The day before his 'grand enterance' on his first day of the tournament, the 11-time bracelet winner managed to crash his expensive promotional race car into a hotel light pole. Hellmuth was said to have suffered 'severe whiplash', which would had made 16 hours per day at a poker table problematic had not gotten his quick exit. COKE SCORES HUGE NASCAR VICTORY: At right, Jamie McMurray sprays some Coke around after winning last weekends dramatic Pepsi 400, which is NASCAR's version of Terrell Owens scoring in Lambeau Field, then running to midfield to take a dump on the circle-G logo. Coca-Cola scores an even bigger victory on Monday as it is announced that they will be phased in as the official soft drink at Daytona as well as nine other ISC tracks over the next few years. As part of the deal, the July Daytona race will now be sponsored by the Cola-Cola company - although no word on whether the race will be sponsored by Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Powerade, or even Minute Maid orange juice. But before selling all your Pepsico stock, they will still have deals with other NASCAR tracks, and should score an equally important victory if Dale Earnhardt Jr., as expected, switches his sponsorship to Pepsi to go along with soon-to-be teammates Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. As anyone who follows NASCAR knows all too well, the battles between various Coke and Pepsi contracts with drivers might as well be known as Civil War II, complete with drivers doing the obigitory 'swig' during television interviews as well as drivers such as Gordon and Johnson immediately throwing away the Powerade bottles placed on top of their cars in Victory Lane.TODAY'S BYU BLOTTER REPORT: Fast becoming a regular fixture at KACSPORTS, kind of like my Ohio State football police report a few years back. Earlier this year we had a starting point guard busted for DUI, along with the USC hockey goalie (in a game v. the Y) exposing himself to horrified Utahns. Then a few weeks back we had the BYU runner who decided to take up downtown mop jousting on the side. Now the football team checks in with the tale of would-be starting running back Manase Tonga. It began when the sociology major ran a stop light and got pulled over - nothing too bad until Tonga tried to give the officers a bogus name. Immediately smelling a rat with Elder Middlebrook, the cops eventually got Tonga's real identity and found that his registration was expired and he had a whopping $207 warrant out for his arrest. A police spokesman insists the incident was not a 'huge deal', just someone making a series of wrong choices. The athletic department and Honor Code office might be holding a slightly dimmer view however. ESPN STUNNER - DAN PATRICK LEAVING: Dan Patrick announces on his radio show that he is leaving ESPN after 18 years, insisting there is no acrimony but saying he was beginning to take his job for granted. Patrick started his career as a CNN reporter from 1983-89 before starting what is now a near two-decade long run in Bristol. Next to Chris Berman, Bob Ley and longtime sidekick Keith Olbermann, Patrick is arguably the most recognizable personality in ESPN's 28-year history. IRL BRAWL!!! Sam Hornish Jr. trades paint with Tony Kanaan's Kwikie-Mart #11 early in Sunday's race at Watkins Glen, and the fiery Brazilian retaliated by making a run at Hornish's car after the checkered flag. An altercation then ensues when the drivers exited their cars. The big twist was when Hornish's FATHER pushed Kanaan, then was knocked to the ground by members of Kanaan's Andretti Green Racing crew - so I imagine we will be hearing about this all week on XM channel 145. Afterwards Kanaan accused Hornish of 'needing his dad to defend him' and that dad's 'ought to be in the grandstand' where there is plenty of room during IRL races. At right, Kanaan contemplates taking out the moped of Dan Wheldon and his passenger before the race. Incidentally, Hornish has been in the rumor mill as possibly joining Penske South's NASCAR operation.TRUCK SERIES DRIVER BUSTED FOR HEROIN: NASCAR CTS driver Aaron Fike arrested in an Ohio parking lot after authorities found a substance believed to be heroin in his SUV. It's said that Fike, 24, and his fiancee, were arrested over the weekend on charges of possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia. Bond hadn't been set and both were still in jail as of late Sunday. Officers at Kings Island amusement park called police after noticing 'suspicious activity' in Fike's Toyota Sequoia. Fike drives the #1 in the Craftsman Truck Series, and is currently standing eighth in the points standings. JERSEY GIRL BLACKMAILED!!! Eight years and David Chase couldn't write an episode involving Meadow or Adrianna like this??? It says Miss New Jersey has now received a SECOND threatening package from someone who I guess really wants her to relinquish her crown. Anthony Caruso, an attorney for Amy Polumbo, said that he was notified about the package and that it contains a threatening letter and perhaps NEW photographs of the 22-year-old woman. Polumbo first announced last week that someone was trying to blackmail her with old photographs. The student at Wagner College in New York did not step down and has declined to comment publicly beyond her announcement. Second-place finisher Ronica Licciardello denies any wrongdoing and wishes Polumbo the best. Maybe Kurt and Kyle Busch can dig up some compromising photos of Jamie McMurray and Jeff Gordon while they're at it. I don't know what the lady did to deserve this, but she needs to throw that nut flush in the muck pile - she betted out of turn, even if she didn't, she still betted out of turn. And you really think the Sopranos was just a TV show... PHILLIES BAIL OUT GROUNDS CREW: Bizarre scene at Coors Field when winds from a sudden storm threatened to take the tarp, not to mention some Rockies groundcrew members, for a ride. As the situation unfolded, the entire Philadelphia Phillies roster bolted en masse from the dugout to lend a helping hand, as one of the grounds crew was able to emerge from under the tarp. According to one player, one worker was thrown ten feet up into the air. Where were the Colorado players you ask??? One did come out, but the rest of the squad was already in the clubhouse. Amazingly, the ensuing delay was only 50 minutes, and the Phillies went on to win the game 8-4.CATCH .22 - FOX FOOTBALL BROADCASTER ARRESTED: Former NFL player and Fox Sports analyst Bill Maas charged with drug possession and weapons charges following a roadside safety check in Illinois. The 45-year-old Maas and a 27-year old female were arrested late Friday. During the stop, police indicated Maas seemed nervous, and he agreed to a search of his vehicle. Police found a .22-caliber revolver, 5 grams of suspected marijuana, 6 grams of suspected cocaine and 28 pills of Ecstasy. Sounds like a far cry from that double-brat he took down Kobayashi-style during a weather delay at Lambeau a few years back. ARENA FOOTBALL PLAYER'S 'RECEPTION' DESTROYED: Would Tom Brady set a wedding date for the month of January??? Would anyone on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays roster even make personal plans like that for the month of October - you could always get traded. That leads us to Dallas Desperados lineman Devin Wyman, who like many people took the plunge and got married on 7/7/07. That's all fine and good except the Desperados went 15-1, and thus had a playoff game tonight. What the unique situation did do was draw some rare attention to an Arena League lineman, and the bride was even interviewed by ESPN during the game and given a bowling ball as a present for some reason (ESPN sure has a deep budget). But the night did not finish as planned for Mr. and Mrs. Wyman, as the Desperados season ended with an upset loss at the hands of the Columbus Destroyers, and of course the margin was seven points. Well, at least the honeymoon is freed up - maybe they should had got this out of the way on 6/6/06. MORE 7/7/07 ODDITIES: Carlos Delgado hits a home run for the Mets at 7:07 PM, the game v. the Astros ends up going 17 innings. Meanwhile Clint Bowyer, driving the #07 car, finishes seventh at the Pepsi 400.MARK GRACE DOESN'T LIKE SOSA?? Perhaps this is anything but a news flash - but then again if Sammy was Cub #1 in 1998 then Grace had to at least be Cub 1A. In any event pretty interesting stuff from Diamondback broadcaster Darin Sutton, while making his weekly appearance on a Milwaukee radio show, in which he said that Grace 'has zero respect' for Sammy Sosa. Some brief investigating led me to a Dominican website where it also sounds like Grace isn't ready to throw Sammy a lifering, where he says (apparently quoted from a radio talkshow) 'this is the red flag, players that made greatnesses fast, great jumps. Guys that in the beginning of their carriers weighed 170 pounds and at the end they were 235'. In the same article, Grace also added that there were 'many players' using steroids and that supplements were also offered to him. BRAT EATING CONTEST CANCELLED: Who dropped the ball on this one?? Johnsonville has pulled sponsorship from their brat-eating contest - thus the competition will not be held during Sheboygan's Brat Days next month, thus losing out on getting the opportunity to host the next installment of Takeru Kobayashi/Joey Chestnut's Sosa/McGwire like duel. Last year Kobayashi inhaled 58 brats in 10 minutes, with Joey a distant second at 45 - both shattered the previous record of 38. Some in Sheboygan are actually cheering Johnsonville's decsion, feeling that the contest somehow 'reflected poorly' on their community. I'm just waiting 20 years down the road when the stories of how eating contest affect the health of competitors later in life come down. NASCAR SAID BORIS WON'T RACE: Friday evening looked like it was going to be a big night for drivers having rough seasons in qualifying for the Pepsi 400. Michael Waltrip and Jeremy Mayfield appeared to be headed for top-ten starting positions while part-timer Boris Said was looking at a potential pole and automatic spot in next year's season opening shootout. Just one problem, and all the rocket fuel in Michael Waltrip Racing can stop it on a typical Florida summer late afternoon - it rains. With a Busch Series race looming, qualifying is officially rained out with just 14 of the 53 cars left. And we all know the rules there, field set on points, which means Said, Waltrip, and Mayfield all go home. Now for my questions, whatever happened to qualifying two days before a race - and why are some places an impound race while others are not. NASCAR has different rules every week, and most wind up biting them in the ass.25-GAME BAN HANDED OUT IN MLB: Veteran infielder Neifi Perez becomes the first Major League Player to get busted for testing positive for a banned stimulant, not to get confused with testing positive for a performance enhancing drug. Perez was batting .172 with one home run and six RBI for the Tigers this season. EX-COWBOYS BINDED BY KIDNEY DONATION: Ron Springs, 50, is a Type 2 diabetic who received a kidney earlier this year by former teammate Everson Walls. It's believed to be the first time a former player gave up an organ for a teammate. Springs uses a prothesis after one of his feet were amputated, along with two toes on the other foot. Before Walls stepped up, other family members offered to donate, including son and current Redskins CB Shawn Springs. The elder Springs rejected that idea. A diabetic since 1990, Springs wants diabetics to avoid his mistakes and to alter diets and lifestyle while being proactive with treatment. RED SOX PLAYOFF BOUND: KACSPORTS has projected the Boston Red Sox as 2007 American League East Champions. Just in case you don't think I should go all-in on this and that a 12-game league isn't good enough - consider the fact that Boston will be facing Tampa Bay in 15 of their final 60 games. On Thursday the stat-piling Red Sox completed an unceremonious three-game sweep of the battered Devil Rays with a 15-4 thrashing, highlighted by the D-Rays Dioner Navarro knocked out cold after taking a header in a collision with pitcher Josh Beckett trying to beat out a grounder. At right, a D-Rays employee retrieves a home run ball from a stingray-filled tank a few weeks back, yes it was the opposition who hit it. |
