The report indicated evidence in several places in the house, including the bathroom and the master bedroom where Beck was found dead June 23. Four smaller caisters were found on a bedroom floor, along with s larger canister containing a dried paste, commonly used to produce rock cocaine. Police also found a loaded semiautomatic handgun in a bag containing numerous glass bowl pipes and torch lighters. Widow Stacey Beck released a statement, discussing her husband's addiction to drugs, and expressing her hope that her family's honesty about the situation would help others dealing with the same problem. TDF WINNER ACCUSSED OF DOPING: What, you actually thought that somehow this guy was clean??? German authorities say they have received documents from a 'doping expert' which he claims show Tour de France winner Alberto Contador was involved in doping. The expert said he has documents from last year's Operation Puerto doping investigation which show that Contador, who won the doping-marred Tour on Sunday, had taken HMG-Lepori as a testosterone booster as well as an asthma product called TGN. Contador, who rides for the Discovery Channel team, missed the 2006 Tour when his former team was disqualified after he and four other riders, plus the team director and doctor, were allegedly linked to Operation Puerto. The Spanish doping investigation is one of the largest scandals in cycling history, with at least 50 riders suspected of getting sophisticated drug services, including blood doping, from a Madrid clinic. SHOCKER - ABC'S ROBIN ROBERTS DIAGNOSES SHE HAS CANCER: Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts announces on TV that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will undergo surgery later this week. Roberts said that the cancer was discovered after following her own advice after airing a story about former ABC film critic Joel Siegel, who died from colon cancer last month. Roberts, 46, became the GMA anchor after a long-stint at ESPN for several years. Roberts was also basketball star at Southeastern Louisiana, where she ranks third all-time in scoring with 1,446 points. A-ROID??? CANSECO SAYS ALEX IS NEXT: We've heard the pundits, never mind Bonds passing Aaron because it's only a matter of time before Alex Rodriguez blows everyone away. And even though A-Rod isn't the greatest sport in the world and has some infidelity issues, at least we know he's clean as far as PED's are concerned. Not so fast says Jose Canseco, who says he has something for A-Rod for his next book. This has to be the most stunning development since Gary Player's blockbuster a couple weeks back that at least one golfer has had to have been on PED's over the last 20 years. Excuse me while I grab hold of a solid object, I think the throat chakra has just let loose. But before you call Canseco's latest raise, just remember that no one took him seriously when he dropped the dirt on Rafael Palmeiro a few years back. Yes, even if he passes every drug test over the next eight years, you can look forward to hearing A-Rod's name linked to PED's at least once or twice or even a hundred times before it is all said or done - I give 2009 at the latest before Arod's name (right or wrong) is front and center. ![]() CHICAGO CRIME SPREE ON NBA PLAYERS??? Two hulking NBA stars were bound with duct tape and robbed of cash and jewelry by masked gunmen in separate holdups that have Chicago-area detectives wondering whether someone is targeting professional athletes. Knicks forward Eddy Curry, all 6'11" and 285 lbs, was tied up along with his wife and an employee at his mansion over the weekend while Miami Heat forward Antoine Walker (6'9" 245) was similiarly robbed along with a relative at his townhouse a few weeks back. Detectives are working on the cases but as of yet have not found a connection.BREWERS ENTER GAGNE SWEEPSTAKES: A top closer in Major League Baseball could find himself demoted to setup work by the close of business today based on the numerous rumors on where Eric Gagne could be headed. The Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, and possibly Brewers are mentioned as potential suitors. The Milwaukee possibility got legs when GM Doug Melvin answered the speculation with a no comment when he usually flat out shoots down trade rumors. Wonder how owners of Jonathan Papelbon and Billy Wagner in fantasy leagues are feeling this morning. But what about the contenders who could use a closer??? Clevleland?? Detroit?? Atlanta?? Anyone??? PLEA DEAL - RAT COULD TESTIFY AGAINST VICK: A possible major blow to the defense of Michael Vick, as the first of co-defendents has flipped and reached a plea bargain - and the others could start falling like dominos. Tony Taylor, 34, faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000, although federal sentencing guidelines likely will call for less. As part of the agreement, Taylor will have to testify against Vick and his co-defendents if called upon. Taylor is scheduled to be sentenced in mid-December, 2½ weeks after Vick's trial is to begin. The 18-page indictment mentions Michael Vick's name no less than 51 times, making clear that he definitely had a piece of the action. And experts also say that since gambling has allegedly taken place, that federal racketeering charges could eventually be tacked on. PACMAN TO STEP INTO WRESTLING RING??? Why not - about the only thing his saga hasn't had to this point. Pacman's agent says he has been contacted by TNA Wrestling to 'participate in their line of entertainment'. It's said that Pacman would not be involved in the actual wrestling, just in the promotion of it. I've got news - one who is involved in wrestling on any level, as a wrestler, jobber, referee, manager, valet, announcer, bell ringer, anyone - is going to be asked to take a bump on occasion. Just so Pacman is warned. CUBS COULD MOVE INTO FIRST: The Brewers run at the top of the National League Central currently stands at an even 100 days - but last time I check they only pay out after the last day the season. The Cubs would take over first by percentage points with a home win Monday night. Meanwhile how about this karma, Tom Glavine goes for his 300th career win at Miller Park Tuesday. Exactly 17 years ago, on July 31, 1990, Nolan Ryan recorded his 300th career win in Milwaukee. COACHING LEGEND BILL WALSH DEAD AT 75: Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh, the architect of the San Francisco 49ers 1980's dynasty, has died following a long battle with leukemia. Nicknamed 'The Genius', Walsh led the 49ers from obscurity, posting a 102-63-1 record and three Super Bowl championships in ten years. Walsh also had two stints as coach of the Stanford Cardinal, including surprisingly taking the head job there following his 49er career. Too bad Bonds couldn't had hit a couple homers yesterday so that could fall to Page 2 of the Bay Area papers.TEX LOOKS HEADED FOR THE A-T-L: According to a report out of Dallas, the Braves have acquired first baseman Mark Teixeira. If you are in a fantasy league and need a catcher, nab Jarrod Saltalamacchia now, as he heads to Texas in the trade and will see regular playing time. That's SALT (think sodium), followed by ALA (think ala mode), then finally MACC-HIA - it's not that hard. The deal is pending medical evaluations of all the players involved. GOLFER FIRES CADDIE DURING ROUND, PICKS SPECTATOR: After hitting the wrong club on his approach shot at the 14th hole during the first round of the Canadian Open, Tour veteran Jay Williamson ends up firing his caddie on the spot, who responds by throwing a bunch of his golf balls into a lake. Williamson then picks 69-year old Don Alexander to be on the bag for the final four holes. Turns out Alexander is a former amateur who actually played in the Canadian Open in 1962. Alexander says he was paid a dozen golf balls for his stint while Williamson hired the caddie of a golfer who had withdrawn for the second round. The strange tiff occurs just a few weeks after Williamson just missed out on his first Tour win losing in a playoff at Hartford. TONY STEWART WINS BRICKYARD, BUT NOW FACES SWEARING PENALTY: It has to be wonderful to have someone on your fantasy racing team win a race, then gets docked with their point deduction after they swear on TV. In case you didn't catch it, Tony Stewart said the following in victory lane after winning the Brickyard 400 - 'This one is for everyone in the stands who pull for me and have to take all the (BS) from everyone else'. NASCAR vice president Jim Hunter was not happy about the incident saying 'The drivers should clean up their language in my opinion. There are a lot of young kids who look up to these drivers. I'd prefer they use the English language.' Three years ago Dale Earnhardt Jr. was hit with a devastating 25 point penalty after cussing after (guess what) winning a race at Talladega, any penalty given to Stewart won't be costly as he has basically ensured a Chase berth by winning the last two weeks. Stewart also says he is not concerned because no penalty can take away the Brickyard trophy from him. I'm just wondering why these guys aren't cussing after wrecking and finishing in 42nd.ANOTHER COACH DOTTED BY LINER: Minnesota Twins third-base coach Scott Ullger was nailed in the jaw by a foul ball while sitting in the dugout in Cleveland Saturday night. Another coach ended up manning the third base box for the ninth inning, but Ullger was joking after the game, noting he'll be eating soup for the next few days. BREWERS SWEPT IN DOUBLEHEADER, LEAD DOWN TO 1½ GAMES: But Ned Yost and Johnny Estrada are telling me to chill out and enjoy the ride, with Estrada noting that fans in Atlanta are never this hard on the Braves. Yeah, team blows a 6-0 lead, Cordero pitches like crap, wastes a terrific outing by rookie Manny Parra, and then loses to a pitcher who was a cool 0-10 in the nightcap. And I'm supposed to be happy about it!!! Actually I'm kind of wishing I was a fan of the A-T-L right about now... ALBERTO CONTADOR 'ALL BUT CLINCHES' TDF: All he has to do is stay on his bike for the final 'ceremonial' stage. Well, that and he also has to pass a few more drug tests - I wouldn't engrave anyone's name in stone on that trophy right about now. DICK POUND SAYS TDF TESTING UNACCEPTABLE: WADA chief notes that they test the yellow jersey leader and four other riders each day - and says he is not impressed. RAY EVERNHAM LOOKING FOR NEW TEAM FOR GIRLFRIEND: Last year at this time Jeremy Mayfield sounded half-crazy suggesting that his freefall from Evernham Motorsports had to do with team owner Ray Evernham spending too much time with developmental driver Erin Crocker. Well consider what has happened since then. As with what happened with Mayfield, Scott Riggs has plummeted outside the top-35 in points. Kasey Kahne has gone from contender to also-ran while Elliot Sadler isn't faring much better than Mayfield did in the #19. And apparently Erin Crocker hasn't been doing too much herself because now Evernham is looking for a different team for her, suggesting that the two's relationship has 'hurt her career'. Not helping Erin's cause was the loss of her sponsors, including Betty Crocker - no relation.754: Yes, it is now only one swing away - two more homers and the Giants can actually start to rebuild. PLAYERS FED UP WITH HOME RUN CHASE??? Omar Vizquel among those pertubed, noting that no one noticed him moving into second place in games played at shortstop last week, adding that someone could pitch a no-hitter and no one would care. Says another player, 'I don't know what the goal is here anymore'LAWSUIT!!! Veteran Kansas City reporter Karen Kornacki hit near the eye by a pellet from a small plastic gun fired by a Royals player while trying to conduct an interview. VICK ENDORSERS JUMP SHIP: Nike suspends its lucrative contract with Michael Vick, while Reebok cut times completely, taking the unprecedented step of stopping sales of his #7 jersey. Reebok, the official uniform supplier of the NFL, said it would stop selling Vick's replica jersey at retail stores and through its Web site. Nike has left open the door of resuming business with Vick should he be acquitted, saying 'Michael Vick should be afforded the same due process as any citizen in the United States.' ONE POSSIBLE NFL HOLDOUT OVER: Marc Bulger signs for 6 years/$65 million, meanwhile Larry Johnson holdout officially begins. A-ROD'S TIME MACHINE: Alex Rodriguez turns 32 today, but still has a shot of going down in the books at the first player ever to hit 500 home runs by the age of 31. Sitting at 499 career home runs, A-Rod will be on-deck when the Yankees finish off a suspended game in Baltimore Friday. If he goes deep, it will obviously be a historic moment. Well, kind of. A-Rod would indeed have 500 home runs, but any home run hit in the suspended game would in fact be his 493rd home run because offically the game happened a month ago. In that case, A-Rod's 500th home run would then become the home run he hit in Kansas City a couple nights ago. BIFFLE SLAMS MICHAEL VICK: When Greg Biffle rips into someone even worse than anyone who has ever taken him out on the racetrack, that is noteworthy. But then again considering that the NASCAR driver is also an animal rights activist, it is no surprise that he decided to chime in on the allegations against Michael Vick, who is accussed of doing everything except for making his dogs run in front of traffic on the backstretch at Talladega. Biffle basically wants the book thrown at Vick - here's what he had to say this week, just keep in mind Vick does get his day in court...'I just wish they'd put him in jail and be done with it. Just put him in prison and tell the general public, just give them all the details of what they do with those dogs. How they steal people's dogs out of their front yards and use them for bait dogs and let other dogs kill them. There's all the horrifying stories. You look at all the pictures on the Internet of the dogs, just maimed, mangled. It's horrible. It goes on everywhere. He's not the only guy. Maybe they'll use him as an example and maybe get some other people to think about whether they want to be in federal prison with him or not.' POINT BLANK - NEW ASTOUNDING DETAILS IN TILLMAN CASE: Army medical examiners are suspicious about the close proximity of three bullet holes in Pat Tillman's forehead and tried without success to get authorities to investigate whether the former NFL player's death was something other than friendly fire, according to a published report. The doctor said that the evidence did not match up with 'the scenario as described'. The report said that the bullet holes were so close together that it appeared that Tillman was cut down by an M-16 fired from only 10 yards away. In other testimony in the 2,300 page report, it was also said that Tillman snapped at a panicky comrade and told him to 'stop sniveling' moments before the former NFL player was killed. In another development, seven high ranking Army officers are expected to be reprimanded, with a three-star general facing demotion. FELLOW RANGER REMAINS CONVINCED IT WAS FRIENDLY FIRE: Army Ranger who was alongside Tillman when he was shot tells ESPN.com he remains convinced that the death was an accident, and not a malicious act. The Ranger says 'There is no way the guy was 10 yards away. That is just completely unlikely. If he was there initially, like the way the conspiracy theorists work that he was there to kill Pat, why wouldn't he have killed me? That doesn't work so well.' AND THE ALEX JONES' TAKE: This article contends that Tillman was ordered killed by higher-ups in the Army, out of fear that he would return home as an 'anti-war icon'. What has been widely reported is that Tillman was quoted as saying 'This war is so f***ng illegal' and had become Anti-Bush, and was in support of John Kerry in the 2004 Presidential Election.CORONER - HEMMORHAGE KILLED COOLBAUGH: A preliminary autopsy report reveals that a burst blood vessel in Mike Coolbaugh's neck, near his brain, killed the first base coach after being hit with a line drive Sunday. The coroner adds that the ball struck on the left side of the neck just below the ear. The coroner noted that the artery compressed against the vertebra at the top of his spin at the base of the skull, resulting in the fatal hemmorhage that prevented the flow of blood to the brain. The coroner would not address on whether a batting helmet would had saved Coolbaugh, although if he was struck below the ear that answer could very well be no. LONGTIME ABC SPORTSCASTER PASSES ON... Broadcast pioneer Bill Flemming, a mainstay on ABC's Wide World of Sports as well as the networks early coverage of college football, has died at age 80. Flemming often worked regional coverage of Big Ten games and the Michigan graduate considered doing the Ohio St./Michigan game a choice assignment - although in later years that game was usually done by Chris Schenkel or Keith Jackson. Flemming was also involved in 11 Olympics as well as over 600 Wide World telecasts, doing play-by-play on everything from Acapulco cliff diving to Bobby Fisher's epic early 70's chess match with Boris Spassky. Flemming leaves behind a daughter as well as his wife of 57 years. |
