KACSPORTS FANTASY FOOTBALL RANKINGS 2006: QUARTERBACKS | RUNNING BACKS

THE FINAL NINE... Jamie Gold, ex-Hollywood talent agent, who has held a commanding lead for most of the WSOP, 25,650,000 chips, ranked 826th for Player of the year - Allen Cunningham, by far the most experienced player in the final table, 17,770,000, 14 wins in major poker tourneys, POY rank 15 - Richard Lee, hails from San Antonio, TX, 11,820,000, only recorded cash was a 12th place finish in something called the Larry Flynt Grand Slam of Poker - Erik Friberg (SWE), 9,605,000, no previous history - Paul Wasicka, 7,970.000, from Denver area, POY rank 1650 - Doug Kim, 6,770,000, Duke University graduate, no history - Rhett Butler, 4,815,000, from Maryland (Chad's probably rooting for him), did not used to hit leadoff for the Braves, did not star in Gone with the Wind - Michael Binger, 3,140,000 from California, made final table in previous 2006 WSOP event, earning $101,000 - Dan Nassif, from St. Louis, 2,600,000, no history.

MICHELLE WIE CADDIE SACKED!!! I knew there was an answer somewhere - that it wasn't Michelle herself who needed to read the Rules of Golf. Rule #1 on the PGA or LPGA tour, when in fault - BLAME THE CADDIE!!! Of course the official statement from the Wie camp is that the decision to fire the caddy 'comes as part of Michelle's maturation as a golfer, part of which is learning from many different bright golf minds.' Of course it has nothing to do with that, it has to do with the caddie not telling Michelle that perhaps she needed to alert a rules official when the moss in the bunker scenario came into play. And it also has to do with the disqualification last year as well as not getting her enough cool drinks in Illinois a few weeks back. Messages left by the media to the ex-caddie's cell phone 'were not immediately returned' - like he's actually going to answer that call...

WSOP UPDATE... (MID-DAY 8/8) Former Hollywood talent agent Jamie Gold continues to hold a commanding lead with over 13 million chips and a stunning Monday performance that saw the 36-year old wipe out two competitors in less than an hour. David Einhorn, a 37-year-old hedge fund manager from New York leaped into the top-five after winning a massive three-way all-in pot. Einhorn's ace/queen won out over a king/jack and a suited seven/eight. Einhorn has announced that his winnings will go to the Michael J. Fox foundation. Fox himself will fly to Las Vegas should Einhorn make the final table. Notables still alive include Jeffrey Lisandro in ninth place and Allen Cunningham in 13th. Popular Costa Rican pro Humberto Brenes busted out on Monday in 36th place after an attempt to steal the blinds backfired on Denmark's Ricki Nielsen, who got busted out himself on the very next hand.

LATE 8/8: Jamie Gold holds serve while increasing his chip stack to 22,600,000. The big mover however is Allen Cunningham, now in second with nearly 13,000,000 chips. Michael J. Fox will not be flying out for the final table, David Einhorn crashed and was busted out in 18th place, taking home $660,000 for the Parkinson's Syndrome charity. (LEADERBOARD)

ANOTHER BENGAL ARREST!!! This continues to happen with the frequency of a Jim Rome vacation - In a new twist, offensive lineman Eric Steinbach was arrested over the weekend for BOATING under the influence. According to the report, Steinbach was charged with operating a boat while under the influence of alcohol and that he ignored a 'no wake zone' area. The report also said Steinbach failed four out of five field sobriety tests. Steinbach started all 16 games last season and was a first alternate to the Pro Bowl - and is now the fifth Bengal to be charged with breaking the law since the end of last season. Wide receiver Chris Henry has been arrested four times since December and is set to stand trial later this month on a gun charge in Florida. Rookies Frostee Rucker and A.J. Nicholson both arrested soon after the NFL Draft, and defensive tackle Matthias Askew was charged with resisting arrest last month. Linebacker Odell Thurman also is suspended for the first four regular-season games for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy. I'll say it again, the team should wear orange for all it's game this year, they sure wear it enough in the pokie...

STEELER APOLOGIZES FOR ARREST: Veteran offensive tackle Barrett Brooks (right) apologizes to the organization for his weekend arrest on charges he fled from police on his motorcycle, saying the chase resulted from miscommunication and not any wrongdoing. But Brooks' comments did not seem to appease coach Bill Cowher, who remained critical of Brooks after addressing the situation Monday during a team meeting. Perhaps Marvin Lewis should take notes...

WHO NEEDS RICKY BOBBY??? Tony Stewart continues to provides tons of real comedy on the NASCAR circuit. During the 'pre-race' show on Sunday, Stewart refers to fellow driver Carl Edwards as 'Eddie Haskell'. Edwards replied simply by calling Stewart a moron.

NBC THROWS LAST-LAP CRASH UNDER THE RUG: There were plenty of Talladega Nights references during Brickyard 400, but no replays of incident of damaged the championship hopes of Kasey Kahne and Greg Biffle. Sounds like the network was too busy plugging their inaugural NFL telecast later that night. Just wait until some of these late-season races get rain delayed, if race fans are lucky the coverage will be shuffled off to TNT. And then there's the 4 1/2 hour Notre Dame game that runs literally into the green flag at Charlotte...

LANDIS TODAY AND TONIGHT... After making about his umpteenth excuse on the Today show, now Floyd Landis is finally due to make an appearance on Jay Leno's Tonight Show. Meanwhile, Landis says he has found it almost impossible to defend himself, citing that Internation Cycling officals are operating on an agenda. Landis acknowledges that his biggest misstep was likely was reacting to media reports highlighting every development in his case. Landis says it gave people the impression he was coming up with new explanations or excuses almost every day.

DID PAUL AZINGER BLUFF ON PGA OFFICIALS??? It is well known that the PGA veteran participated in the World Series of Poker main event last weekend. So what was the big deal in that??? You see, Azinger was entered in the Greater Milwaukee Open, but withdrew after the 'commitment deadline'. According to another player, Azinger's story was that his father was about to undergo surgery. I guess what was going on with Dad was enough to keep him from the greens but not enough to keep him from the green felt. According to PGA rules, any golfer withdrawing after the committment deadline must cite a legitimate reason such as injury, illness, or a family emergency - or face possible disciplinary action. I don't think poker falls within those guidelines. Also, Azinger was in this weeks tour event in Michigan which begged the question on what Zinger would had done had he still been alive at the WSOP. Zinger's response??? 'Are you kidding??? For a shot at $11.8 million??? You're darn right I would have dropped out.' At least he's not bluffing there...

MICHELLE WIE TWO-STROKE PENALTY: This will Give Steve Czaban another two weeks worth of material. Michelle Wie thought her round at the Woman's British Open was bad enough when reporters came up to her afterwards, informing her that she should assess herself a penalty for hitting a piece of moss during her backswing on a bunker shot on the 14th hole. That was in violation of rule 13-4c of the Rules of Golf. You may recall that Wie was disqualified in her pro debut last year after a violation which she did not report, leading to signing an incorrect scorecard. When asked later if she would start brushing up on the Rules of Golf now, Wie replied 'Well, they're not actually great reading material', proving she could use some work on her grammar skills as well. Yeah, boring reading material - my downfall in school...

PICTURE OF THE DAY... Ah, the plus side of summer. Russian divers Natalyia Umyskova and Nadezhda Bazhina embrace after winning a synchronized three-meter springboard event during a European championship over the weekend.

IDITAROD LEGEND IS DEAD: Some sad dog-sledding news in the middle of an August heat wave. Four-time Iditarod champion Susan Butcher, who in 1986 became the race's second female winner and helped put one of the world's most grueling races on the map, has died at age 51 due to a reoccurance of leukemia after a recent stem-cell transplant. Butcher dominated the 1,100-mile sled dog race through Alaska, scoring her four wins between 1986 and 1990 and placing in the top-four through 1993. Before competing in the Iditarod, Butcher helped drive the first sled-dog team to the 20,320-foot summit of Mount McKinley, the highest peak in North America. Butcher's health problems first surfaced when attempting a comeback three years ago, when doctors found a rare disease that caused bone marrow to produce excess blood, eventually leading to the leukemia.

A GOLDEN WSOP??? Three years after Chris Moneymaker's historic win, another relative unkown could be striking gold in poker's most lucrative event. Californian Jamie Gold, ranked 785th in the world, has built an impressive lead while approaching nearly 4,000,000 chips. Among the notables still in contention include Jeffrey Lisandro in 15th place along with Annie Duke in 26th. If Annie can pull a win or even final table appearance, she and Howard Lederer could very well become poker's biggest empire. Early leader Ken Jacobs had fallen back badly, but has rebounded and is also back in the top-30. The event has run way ahead of schedule, only 135 players remain heading into Sunday.

FORMER NASCAR DRIVER IN BAD INTERSTATE CRASH: Jeff Purvis, 47, was among the injured after his rig carrying his race car, blew a tire, crossed the median, struck an oncoming car and burst into flames. Purvis, who suffered a bad head injury in a race crash four years ago, is said to have sustained a broken neck. Three others, including Purvis' wife and 15-year old son were also injured. Purvis enjoyed a long Winston Cup and Busch Series career, running in 50 NASCAR races over nine years. In 2002, he was seriously injured in a crash at Nazareth Speedway, sustaining severe head injuries that kept him from racing for two years. More recently, Purvis has competed in short-track Late Model series, and was en route to an event when the accident happened.

WILL FERRELLS' TALLADEGA NIGHTS
OFFEND RACE FANS???

NASCAR is all onboard heavily promoting upcoming picture, and for good reason considering that three recent Will Ferrell flicks grossed over $300 million. But by giving Ferrell the green-light, NASCAR allowed him to poke fun at the sports' Southern heritage, the sponsor-fueled culture, the rabid fans and every other stereotype generally associated with America's most popular racing series. Ferrell's character, Ricky Bobby, bills himself as the man who could only count to #1. While Dale Earnhardt. Jr. makes a brief cameo in the film, Jeff Gordon decided to take a pass after consulting with his sponsors. The film also stereotypes a French Formula One driver who becomes Ricky Bobby's rival, the timing of that is interesting considering Juan Pablo Montoya's recent move to NASCAR.

FLOYD LANDIS FINISHED: 'B' sample turns out just as bad as the 'A' sample, Landis 'dismissed without notice' by his team - Tour De France also no longer considers him as champion, although the final decision rests with the International Cycling Union. The French anti-doping council considers the tests to be 'foolproof' and that 'no error is possible in isotopic readings'. Landis of course maintains that he has never taken any banned substance, and vows to clear his name. Good luck with that one.

DA MATTA DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS UPDATE: Cristiano da Matta remains in an induced coma after undergoing emergency surgery to remove a hematoma near his brain. Doctors said that the first 24 hours following surgery were going to be crucial. Meanwhile more details have emerged about the freak accident. According to an eyewitness, da Matta was approaching Turn 6 at Road America when the deer ran out in front of him and struck the right front of his RuSPORT Lola. The venison then caroms INTO THE COCKPIT, while da Matta smashes head-on into the tire barriers with his foot still floored on the throttle. A spokesman added that DaMatta unlikely knew what hit him. Meanwhile, Road America officials explained that the grounds are surronded by an eight-foot fence topped by barbed wire, and that the track is constantly searched for stray wildlife. However officials also stated that it is very possible for a deer to jump and actually clear the fence. Clearing an eight-foot fence - that is Dwight Stones stuff. And actually I do remember reading about one close call with a driver nearly hitting a deer several years back.

REMAINING WSOP PLAYERS IN THE MONEY... 36 year-old man hangs on to his one remaining chip for incidental purposes long enough to get in the money - good thing for him as he was fired from his job the day before the WSOP Main Event began and borrowed $500 to win a satellite qualifier. Says he will use his winnings to pay off credit card bills - so he wards off Chapter 7 for a few more months. By the way, stalling waiting for others to bust out to make the money is a very good way to piss off everyone in your table. Meanwhile, Costan Rican Humberto Brenes enjoyed bullying the short stacks, moving from 148,000 chips to nearly 450,000 by the dinner break - moving into the top-20 overall. Meanwhile Daniel Negreanu, lost more than half his chip stack, he is down to 158,000. Tournament favorite Phil Ivey headlined those eliminated on Friday, a casualty list that also included Juan Carlos Mortensen, Layne Flack, Freddy Deeb and Josh Arieh.

OHIO STATE #1 IN PRE-SEASON POLL: But faces early-season test at #2 Texas...

STAT OF THE DAY... If you play fantasy baseball, you might want to make sure you have Vladimir Guerrero whenever the Angels play Texas. Vlad has a 43-game hitting streak in games v. the Rangers, including a .441 batting average and an .800 slugging percentage.

'KID POKER' MAKES HIS MOVE... Monster hand on Wednesday puts Daniel Negreanu third out of 1,159 players with 331,000 chips out of an original stack of 10,000. A late move also put defending champion Joseph Hachem in the top-30 with 142,000 chips. Other notables include Humberto Brenes with 148,300, Ted Forrest 130,900, Josh Arieh 85,600, Cyndy Violette 79,000, Juan Carlos Mortensen 77,600, Hoyt Corkins 67,900, Annie Duke 67,000, Freddy Deeb 64,500, Jesus Ferguson 55,200, Kathy Liebert 48,500 Phil Ivey 23,400 (last gasp coming for him). Top 873 players cash, play resumes Friday with blinds at 600/1200.

SUICIDAL DEER BIG TROUBLE FOR CHAMP CAR DRIVER: 2002 series champion Cristiano da Matta needs emergency surgery for a subdural hematoma near his brain after colliding with venison during test session at Elkhart Lake...

LANDIS CHURNS YET ANOTHER ALIBI... Cyclist now says dehydration caused him to test positive for excess testosterone. Anti-doping officials immediately referred to that as a bunch of manure, saying if that were the case marathon runners would test positive all the time. Back to the drawing board for Floyd, where there's no escape.
