2007 FANTASY FOOTBALL IS HERE: QUARTERBACKS | RUNNING BACKS | WIDE RECEIVERS | TIGHT ENDS/KICKERS | TEAM DEFENSES

DALLAS MORNING NEWS SITE: This is a well-done fantasy section I found, lot of rankings updated to the minutes - writer also going big on some sleepers I happen to like and thinks highly of wide receivers such as Craig Davis (SD), Vincent Jackson (SD), and James Jones (GB)

BUSCH SERIES DRIVER BACK IN THE SADDLE: Brad Keselowski cleared to race this weekend at Richmond after amazingly escaping last week's savage, fiery crash at California Speedway. Keselowski has also been signed by JR Motorsports for the rest of the 2007 season.

SHOCKER - MILTON BRADLEY EJECTED: Consider the odds, Zambrano and Uncle Milt blowing their lids on the consecutive days - and just think, Michael Barrett has had to put up with them both this year. The mercurial outfielder (that's the wire copy folks) was 0-for-2 with four men left on base before The mercurial outfielder was 0-for-2 with four men left on base getting run for arguing balls and strikes.

CHIPPER JONES WHINING AGAIN: First John Smoltz, then Alex Rodriugez, now it's the men in blue. Not happy about striking out in the slumping Braves loss, Larry goes off on the umpires saying 'The first pitch to me with the bases loaded was in my batter's box, inside. Now you tell me how I'm supposed to hit that. We have to get Questec here in this ballpark. We've got to. Umpires have got to be held accountable. That's Little League World Series stuff right there. It's a joke. I'm tired of it. And baseball can fine me whatever they want. I do not care. Somebody's got to say something. I've got more walks than strikeouts in my career. I know what a strike looks like.' Somebody get Chipper and Curt Schilling together for a town hall meeting on Questec.

SHAQ SEEKS DIVORCE: Basketball superstar opting to stay quiet during this trying time. I was going to ask this when Pat Summitt called it quits a few weeks back, people get married there's a big announcement, divorces outside of Norman Chad no one wants to talk about.

NEW AT 10, Z SAYS SORRY TO CUBS NATION: Carlos Zambrano apologizes to Wrigley faithful one day after criticizing them after getting booed off the mound after allowing eight earned runs in 4+ innings. The public apology came After Z met earlier in the day with team president John McDonough and general manager Jim Hendry. Zambrano has a 9.56 ERA in three starts since the Cubs inked him to a $91.5 million extension a few weeks back, and is 0-5 with an 8.29 ERA in six starts since August 1.

CARR, MICHIGAN HIT RESET BUTTON: In an unprecedented fall from the polls, Michigan falls from #5 all the way to unranked. The farthest fall ever for a ranked team was when Notre Dame fell from #9 to #25 after losing their 1995 opener to perennial also-ran Northwestern, although the Wildcats would prove not to be anything but a fluke that year winning the Big Ten title. Meanwhile life has been anything but easy for Michigan alums, one example is Colts defensive back Marlin Jackson, who says he's been besieged by text messages this week just saying 'Appalachian State'. Meanwhile one wonders what Lloyd Carr will do in preparation for this weeks game v. Oregon - take the nameplates off the backs of the jerseys (Miami new coach Randy Shannon the latest to use that tired tactic) or perhaps just taking the winged logo off the helmet (in case your wondering that's not a wing, it's how the old leather helmets were stitched and Michigan decided one year to paint the front and the stripes yellow).

NFL STAR LATEST ATHLETE TO BE HELD AT GUNPOINT: Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson was said to be tied up and held at gunpoint as robbers ransacked his home in an exclusive Houston area suburb. It's said the 5'10" 175 lb Robinson was inside his million dollar home when two men wearing red bandanas with Los Angeles Dodgers caps entered through an unlocked door. NBA players Eddy Curry and Antoine Walker have also been robbed and held at gunpoint in their own homes this year in what is becoming a disturbing trend. You'd think these guys would be owning some big, nasty dogs.

APPALACHIAN STATE STAYING PUT IN D1-AA: The North Carolina school considered a move up to D-1 a few years back and found out that their facilities had a ways to go to compete with the big boys. Western Kentucky became D-1's latest 'expansion team' this year, and is transitioning to D-1. Since 1992 Division 1 football has grown by 14 teams. Marshall and Boise State are among the few that made an immediate impact. On the other side of the coin are schools such as Buffalo, Florida International, and several programs now residing in the Sun Belt Conference. Among the newbies playing the big boys, Arkansas State by far fared the best last weekend as their 21-13 loss at Texas may be every bit as impressive as Appalachian St.'s win. Meanwhile Troy (who did get to host and beat Missouri at home two years ago) lost 46-26 at Arkansas, FIU was blanked 59-zip at Penn State, Idaho did fairly well losing to an uninspired USC team 38-10, Western Kentucky fell at Florida 49-3, and North Texas was throttled 79-10 at Oklahoma. WKU is expected to be the last new D1-A team for a while as the NCAA says they will not accept promote any current D1-AA teams until at least 2011.

GOALPOST LANDS IN CHANCELLOR’S DRIVEWAY: Within minutes of the upset locals are already ranking second next to the 1980 Miracle On Ice, several students got inside the university's vacant stadium and uprooted and tore down one of the goalposts. Before long those students got plenty of help as the goalpost was paraded through town, finally being deposited in the driveway of the school's chancellor. With the game unavailable on local cable thanks to the wonderful Big Ten Network, a local pub was warned twice about overcrowding by the fire marshal. One of the students turned away ended up listening to the final moments on a car radio, and got to celebrate three seconds early as the broadcast of the blocked field aired three seconds before the delayed feed on TV. The only downside of the subsequent celebration was that bars started running dry by about 8 PM.

PLAYOFFS!?!? PHIL MIGHT TAKE THE WEEK OFF: Golf’s two biggest names paired up and in contention on the final day, sounds pretty good without a screwy 'playoff' format no one understands. In golf's answer to the Red Sox/Yankess rivalry, Phil Mickelson scorches the front 9 and holds off Tiger Woods for a rare tour victory where the two were in contention together. The win also vaults Phil on top the FedEx points standings – but Phil says he might skip this weeks event in Chicago, noting that the kids go to school this week and he also has issues with the PGA commissioner and the playoff format. It would mark the third week in a row that a top player skipped a 'playoff' event, Tiger Woods skipped the opener while Ernie Els decided he had better things to do across the pond then play this week. In addition Padraig Harrington has decided to head back to Ireland for the week. The Tour is quickly finding out that this is not NASCAR, no matter how much of an 'annuity' to offer you aren't going to force participants into playing four straight weeks. As far as most golfers are concerned there are four 'playoff games', they are called the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA Championship – and the Ryder/Presidents Cup. And although the idea of concluding the Deutschemark Classic on Labor Day Monday might be cute, how much sense does that make with the next tournament coming up on Thursday. I'll just let that one bite the PGA in the ass the year they have weather problems in Boston and are forced to finish on Tuesday.

CAREER OF CARDS OUTFIELDER FEARED OVER: When attending a game and see just how close the on-deck hitter is to the batters box (about 30 feet) you wonder why something horrific like this hasn't happened more often. Juan Encarnacion remains hospitalized three days after being drilled by a foul ball while standing in the on-deck circle. Doctors are fearing permanent loss of vision after Encarnacion suffered multiple fractures to his eye socket as well as a concussion. The Cardinals team physician calls the injury the worst he has ever seen, comparing the injury to the eye socket similar to an egg shell or ice cream cone being crushed. Encarnacion missed the beginning of this season after wrist surgery, but recovered well, having an 18-game hitting streak and batting cleanup for the Cards on many nights.

PENGUINS/SABRES PLAN NEW YEAR'S OUTDOOR GAME: Game would be played in Ralph Wilson Stadium with upwards to 60,000 fans expected, NBC would televise the New Year's Day game that would be dubbed the Ice Bowl (that's original). The NHL's last foray outdoors featured the Canadiens and Oilers doing battle four years ago on what was an even more frigid than anticipated night at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium. On the college level, Michigan and Michigan St. played before nearly 80,000 at Spartan Stadium while Wisconsin and Ohio St. faced off at Lambeau Field two years ago. Boston College has also contemplated playing a home game at Fenway Park. Holding the outdoor games are a potential logistical nightmare, not to mention the spectators being a mile away and the TV angles not being the greatest. But Pens/Sabres would be a marquee matchup that would at least draw a number in the two cities involved, and might even get a few others who stumble (maybe) literally on a day always dominated by college football.

BRENNAN THROWS SIX TD'S IN FIRST HALF: Hopefully you have Colt Brennan in your college football fantasy pool, as he throws four TD's in first quarter and six in the first half alone before June Jones calls off the dogs. Guess UH wanted to make sure that they had no problem with their 1-AA opponent.

0 for O's, BIRDS NO-HIT: The good news was that the Orioles did break their nine-game losing streak Friday night, albeit by the skin of their teeth. Saturday night was another matter however, as emergency starter Clay Buchholz no-hits Baltimore in his second career start. So to summarize since Trembley signed that extension, the team is now 1-10, gave up a MLB record 30 runs in one game, gave up 11 runs in the eighth inning of another game, and now have been no-hit by someone who was pitching in A ball this time last year. Buchholz's gem is the first Boston no-hitter since Derek Lowe in April 2002, and Hideo Nomo pitched his second career no-hitter as a Red Sox in 2001. The last Boston no-hitter prior to that was in 1965. Ironically, the organization told him when he made a spot start a couple weeks back that he was going back to the minors 'even if he pitched a no-hitter'. Also in a post-game interview Buchholz said he didn't dare shake off Varitek during the ninth inning, Schilling probably reminded him before he came out.

FANTASY FOOTBALL PICK-UP OF THE WEEK: No matter how deep your league is with everyone with a pulse drafted, leave it to Mike Shanahan to produce yet another running back who could come from absolutely nowhere to make a fantasy impact. After a couple impressive pre-season performances and some injuries to other running backs in camp, Shanahan has hinted that undrafted Texas rookie Selvin Young has vaulted to second-string. And considering the possibility of Travis Henry getting dinged or being distracted after he gets hit with about four more paternity suit, you may see Selvin making an impact sooner rather than later - and Shanahan tends to throw people into the fire without any prior warning. And even though Selvin didn't get on the field a lot as a Longhorn, remember Priest Holmes also didn't do much at UT before starring in the NFL.

SUBDIVISIONS - RUSH TO CAN CARR AFTER HISTORIC UPSET??? If you lose to a D1-AA (errrr Football Championship Subdvision) team but few in the midwest see it because it aired on the Big Ten Network, does it make a sound??? Losing to Ohio State may be one thing, but this is totally another for embattled coach Lloyd Carr after a blocked 37-yard field goal in the closing seconds seals Michigan's fate in a 34-32 loss to two-time defending Division 1-AA Champion Appalachian State. It is believed that a top-25 team has never lost to a team from a lower division at least since 1978. The biggest upset scored by a D1-AA team prior to today was a win by The Citadel at Arkansas in 1992 which resulted in the firing of the Razorbacks coach immediately following the game.

BODY FOUND FEARED TO BE FATHER OF JAMEER NELSON: Authorities say a body pulled from the Delaware River on Saturday is likely the missing father of Orlando Magic guard Jameer Nelson. Floyd Nelson had been unaccounted for since vanishing near the area of a tugboat where he was to eat lunch at his job Thursday in suburban Philadelphia. The body was found at least 10 miles downstream of the fast-moving river where Nelson vanished.

NFL LOGO TO GET TWEAKED: The league is calling it more of an evolution than a radical change, but perhaps the most recognized logo in professional sports is getting an unmistakable makeover. Notice the sleeker font, a darker shade of blue, a more impressive looking football, and eight stars instead of 25. The original NFL logo dates back to the 1940's, although the 1960's version featured pinstripes to go along with the white background. The new look is to be introduced at the 2008 NFL Draft. But for my money the old AFL logo (being worn as a patch by the Kansas City Chiefs this year as part of a Lamar Hunt tribute) with the eagle is still the best, looks like the logo of an Apollo moon mission.

DAVE TREMBLEY CONTRACT EXTENSION NOT WORKING TOO WELL: We have found a place where things are actually going worse than it is for the Brewers and White Sox. A little over a week ago Orioles management was happy enough with the performance of manager Dave Trembley that they took the interim off his job title and gave him a nice little extension. Then his team goes out and promptly loses 30-3 to the Texas Rangers. The running joke at the time was that Dave might become the first manager to get an extension, then get fired on the same day. But the truth of the matter is that it was only one of 162 games, the loss would count just the same if it was 100-3. In fact that was only the first game of a doubleheader, the team could have gone out, won the second game and been level for the night. Unfortunately, the O's lost the second game that night - and have lost seven more in a row since then, with one of those including YET another epic bullpen collapse that saw the lowly Devil Rays hang an 11 spot in the eighth inning. The good news is that the team isn't even halfway to that 21-game skid in 1988 (0-21 to open the year will never be repeated). But then again, they are in Boston for a three-game series this weekend and the team's #1 pitcher is on the shelf.

NASCAR STUNNER - GIBBS RACING SWITCHING TO TOYOTA??? In what would be an essential victory for the upstart manufacturer which would also change the NASCAR landscape, it is expected that Joe Gibbs Racing will make the official announcment next week. Gibbs Racing has fielded GM cars, first Pontiac then Chevrolet, since it's inception in 1992. Gibbs currently fields cars for Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin, and their impressive operation also adds Kyle Busch for 2008. Toyota entered the NASCAR fray for the first time just this year, with most of it's drivers struggling just to make the field with upstart operations that did not have the previous year's owners points to fall back on.

DRUG TESTING COMING TO PGA TOUR IN 2008??? The PGA Tour is said to be nearing completion on a comprehensive drug policy, with commissioner Tim Finchem saying testing could start as early as next year. Still to be determined are exemptions for therapeutic use, such as Shaun Micheel taking medication to cope with low testosterone. Other details that have not been completed include which drugs should be banned and potential penalties.

GAELIC FOOTBALL STAR EXPOSED AS DOGFIGHTING FIGURE: I have said there ARE others in the sports world - A star in Ireland's Gaelic football league was identified as a director of an illegal dog-fighting club, part of a disturbing expose which appeared on television in Northern Ireland. The 17-month undercover investigation by BBC Northern Ireland's network, found evidence of 15 illegal dog-fighting operations in the British territory of 1.7 million people. The program secretly filmed 31-year old Gaelic football player Gerard Cavlan, discussing his ownership of more than a dozen dogs -- and bragging about how one dog gripped it's rival in its jaws, saying 'he had him in the chest, and he shook him and he shook him for 25 minutes'. The TV program deployed an undercover specialist who duped organizers of two dog-fighting clubs and two breeders of American pit bulls in Finland who supplied dogs to Cavlan and other Northern Ireland-based dog fighters. They were filmed discussing all the tricks of their trade.

CRACKDOWN - TEN SUSPENDED BY WWE FOR STEROID USE: Wrestlers were not identified, but I'm sure regular viewers of their programming may notice some of their favorites conspicuous by their absence in upcoming programs. Under a wellness policy instituted last year that requires up to four test per year for steroids and other drugs, WWE talent is subject to a 30-day suspension without pay for a first violation, 60 days for a second violation and termination for a third offense.

WAKE ME WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS - OZZIE BLOWS UP AFTER LOSS: You knew this eruption was coming from the manager of the last place White Sox, you know - the expletive-laden tirade that gets remembered alongside those of Dennis Green and Lee Elia. In think this rant following the South-Siders extra-inning loss Wednesday night will do the trick, here's an excerpt: 'I hope somebody out there cares the way we care. Good guys or nice guys finish f----- last. I'm tired of seeing that sh*t, day in and day out. And I don't want to spend a miserable September seeing the same sh*t. If I have to see the same sh*t, I told Kenny (Williams), 'Bring somebody up. f--- it.' If it's my fault, I should be moving out of here then. If it's my fault, f----- fire my ass and I'll be fine. I have the job to do and I get paid a lot of f----- money to make this club work, but it's not easy to work with people like that' Ozzie also said his team's performance is 'killing' him, the team, the coaching the owner, the GM, the fans, and probably the entire Western Hemisphere.

TODD MARIJUANAVICH BUSTED AGAIN: Now 38, Marinovich is jailed without bail following a probation violation. Todd was found skateboarding in a prohibited area near the Newport pier boardwalk, and later found hiding in a carport. Found inside a guitar case was gram a of powdered meth, a metal spoon and a hypodermic needle. Marinovich has been mired with drug problems ever since being a star quarterback at USC and a first-round draft pick of the Raiders in 1991. You may recall Marinovich was groomed by his dad with a special diet growing up. 38 and skateboarding??? Todd has to be the world's oldest degen teenager.
