MID '90'S NETS TEAMS 'FULL OF CRIMINALS': Speaking at a news conference, Former New Jersey Nets president Jon Spoelstra said the team was filled with 'convicts and criminals' during his tenure - adding that his players were in so much legal trouble that team publications could have been filled with mug shots. Spoelstra noted that during one season six players landed in jail, adding 'Not together, because that would have meant teamwork.'

KURT BUSCH HONORARY DEPUTY!?!? Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio tries to make good with NASCAR star Kurt Bush, one year after Busch was involved in a highly publicized confrontation with Arpaio's deputies. Only one problem, the sheriff greats him as Kyle. Obviously the Sheriff does not know about Busch, or his career achievements including the 2004 Cup title, his 15 Cup wins, including five at Bristol Motor Speedway, or getting punched out by Jimmy Spencer and being the last man ever to be flipped off by Dale Earnhardt.

BAY AREA EXODUS CONTIUES: Just two days after the Oakland A's unveiled plans to move 20 miles south to a proposed site in Fremont, the 49ers announce that they are leaving San Francisco and will build a new stadium 30 miles away in Santa Clara. A proposed new stadium at Candlestick point is supposed to serve as a centerpiece of a 2016 Olympic bid. The Niners have spent 60 years in the city, before moving to Candlestick the team played at Kezar Stadium, which still stands (although rebuilt as a high school facility following the 1989 earthquake) at the southeast corner of Golden Gate Park in the Haight-Ashbury district. Although the club says it's a done deal, count on the city getting back into the negotiations. Typical game between pro sports franchise and a city.

KEVIN MATHIS NECK FRACTURE: Update out of the A-T-L this morning reveals that Mathis indeed did break his neck trying to take down the Lions Eddie Drummond during the opening kickoff in Detroit. The injury is considered Mathis' second significant spinal injury in five years - and it is expected to end his career.

AND ANOTHER SCARY MOMENT IN THE D: It just seems like all these things happen in Detroit. Red Wings' Jason Williams (not to be confused with all the Jason Williams who have played in the NBA in the last ten years) is carted out of Joe Louis Arena after being on the receiving end of a clean but devastating check by Edmonton's Raffi Torres. Williams was attempting to score a wraparound on Dwayne Roloson when he was jacked up. The incident comes as the first anniversity of the Jiri Fischer heart episode approaches.

CANADIAN GRAPPLER STABBED IN NIGERIA: Canadian wrestling gold medalist Daniel Igali survives a frightening knife attack in Nigeria, where he is helping establish an academy to help the poor in his native land. Igali said that he was confronted by four robbers in his home. The assailants stabbed him three times in the back and made off with cash, laptops and phones. Igali adds that none of his Olympic memorabilia was taken.

BRYAN PATA DEATH RULED HOMICIDE: UM defensive end Bryan Pata was shot and killed Tuesday night, shortly after leaving the practice field, according to a school official with knowledge of the situation. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because a formal announcement was still being prepared by the university, has no knowledge of the circumstances surrounding Pata's death. It's said that Pata has no history of getting into trouble since being in the Miami program, and there is no word on possible suspects or motives, including the recent brawl between UM and Florida International University.

BRYAN PATA MYSPACE PAGE (discretion advised - profanity in feedback section)

ARGUMENT PRECEEDED SHOOTING: According to family friend, Pata argued with an unknown man in the parking lot, and was shot in the back of the head as he turned to walk away from the dispute. Says the witness, 'He was going to kill him all along.'

PATA WAS SHOT IN BACK OF HEAD: Slain University of Miami football player Bryan Pata suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the hallway of his gated apartment complex, at least one of which was to the back of the head at point blank range, according to multiple sources.

PATA OWNED GUN COLLECTION: SI.com reports Pata recently invited a sportswriter to the apartment. During the tour, Pata showed a few guns that he kept in his closet which said he used at shooting ranges. Pata majored in criminology and had said in the past that he and fellow UM lineman Kareem Brown might one day join the FBI.

POLICE 'TIGHT-LIPPED': Interest in Pata's murder intensified Wednesday as reporters from across the nation swamped the Miami-Dade's police department's media relations bureau, prompting spokespersons to issue a release asking that such requests be curbed. Pata's body was discovered by his girlfriend, a UM sophomore, a couple hours after Pata returned from practice.

MARYLAND/MIAMI GAME TO BE PLAYED: Problem with postponing the game is that neither team has an off weekend left, and Maryland is tied for first place in their division - so the game almost has to be played.

PATA'S APARTMENT: Looks like most of the parking is in back, and a pretty big complex. Talk about a real-life episode of CSI/Miami. Incidentally, looking at a tape of the UM/FIU incident, Pata did not appear to be involved, all I saw of him was a couple of glimpses of him on the sideline afterwards.

WAS CONSIDERED MID-ROUND DRAFT PROSPECT: This was written by Yahoo! Draft expert John Murphy a few weeks back - 'Miami defensive lineman Bryan Pata played his entire career at defensive end before being switched to defensive tackle the past few games. The senior lacks ideal size (6'4" 285) to take the pounding of an interior line spot, but is one of the Hurricanes strongest athletes. He also posesses good speed (4.8 in the 40).' Murphy goes on to say that Pata has shown flashes of brilliance, and had improved enough to be a possible Day 1 (third round) pick either as a 4-3 defensive end or a one-gap defensive tackle. Another report I read on him suggested that there was a disciplinary issue during Pata's career, as he was suspended for 2004's season-opener v. Florida State - the capsule ends by saying Pata's 'football character is suspect'.

SOMETHING NOT RIGHT ABOUT THIS WEEKEND: If you get your college football fix from NBC, ABC, CBS, ESPN, TBS, or even FOX Sports Net, you will notice something missing this weekend, as in one particular team will not be appearing. No, Notre Dame is not on a bye, they indeed have a game scheduled at the Air Force Academy. But the Mountain West's contract is with Versus (OLN) and CSTV, and it will be CSTV carrying the game. The upshot is that if you don't have digital the game will not be available, just call it yet another carrot for upstart specialty sports networks trying to get subscribers and cable companies to make the jump. It will be the first time in 169 games (since 1992) that the Irish will not be shown on a major TV network. I think the world will still be standing come Saturday night however.

JOHN DALY CLIMBS ON ALL-TIME CAREER DIVORCE LIST: This comes from the complete shock department, not. Two-time major champion John Daly and his wife have BOTH filed for divorce, talk about mutual consent. According to Mrs. Daly's lawyer, it was a 'race to the courthouse', with Sherrie Miller-Daly filing on October 17th with John dropping off his paperwork a day later. You may remember that Sherrie Daly is fresh off a stint in federal jail after a case involving finances from an alleged drug and gambling ring. If you are scoring at home, this is divorce number four for Long John, which ties him with Ted Leitner and Tom Leykis on the all-time career divorce list, which is mighty rarified air. But Daly has an even bigger problem in regards to his golf career - Daly finished 193rd on the money list this year, meaning he will have to rely on sponsors exemptions to get into PGA events in 2007. However Daly continues to cash in on golf's Silly Season, which is just getting into full swing - Daly is playing in Greg Norman's Shootout this week, and also has invites for the Skins Game later on this month, as well as Tiger Woods' Target World Challenge.

PLAYER ONCE WANTED TO WHACK GM!?!? I'm mean really. As in taking a gun and taking him down in the parking lot. That's the shocking story that long-time big-leauger Lonnie Smith is admitting to, saying in a story that he felt that one-time Royals GM John Schuerholz not only released him following the 1987 season, but was conspiring with others to get him blackballed from the major leagues. Says Lonnie, 'If I couldn’t get back to baseball, I was going to take him with me. I was going to fly out there (to Kansas City), wait for him in the parking lot of the stadium and pop him. If I got caught, I got caught. If not, I’d come on back home.' Lonnie adds that even bought a gun in late February 1988, but less than a week later, he ended up catching up with the Atlanta Braves. Smith, who battled drug addiction for several years, was able to kick the habit and eventually won Comeback Player of the year honors. The story has one more twist, Schuerholz eventually left the Royals and became GM for the Braves, Lonnie said he tried to avoid him at all costs - but the two ended up 'reluctantly' embracing after the Braves won the National Leauge West title in 1991. Lonnie would be remembered later that year for a baserunning blunder that kept the Braves from potentially scoring the winning run in Game 7 of the World Series. Smith says that to this day he has not completely overcome his venom for Schuerholz, while the now retired GM has not commented on the story.

BRONCOS/CHARGERS BECOMES WEEK 11 'FLEX GAME': NBC chooses AFC West showdown over Colts/Cowboys clash. CBS will move that game from a 1 PM start to a 4:15 doubleheader game which will be seen in most of the country. NBC's first 'flex game' this coming Sunday is also a blockbuster, with the 7-1 Bears playing at the 6-2 Giants in a game which could have major playoff ramifications.

HARVICKS ATTACKED AFTER TEXAS RACE: This is why NBC should not immediately go into football after a Cup race (like they care, they got two telecasts left), as I told someone there would be post-race fireworks after this. In the closing laps of the Dickies 500 Scott Riggs (trying to hold onto second place with old tires) is flat out punted by Kevin Harvick - to the surprise of absolutely nobody. One would think that the Riggs camp would not take that sitting down, and sure enough, Harvick is confronted by a Riggs crewman on the way back to the garage. It's said the crewman first talked 'smack', then pushed Kevin Harvick into the back, sending him into wife Delana Harvick and a NASCAR official. It's said that Mr. and Mrs. Harvick and the official all wound up on the ground while the Riggs crewman went running. Afterwards Harvick contended that he only spun Riggs out because he was blocking, and added that the crewman's actions were 'unnecessary'. Perhaps - but lets say the roles were reversed and Harvick got sent into the wall, you think he would take that lying down??? Knowing Harvick I can assure you no. The biggest shame is Harvick was allowed to keep his third place finish. Much more on this coming in my blog.

TENNESSEE TRIO ARRESTED: Tennessee starting running back Arian Foster and two other players were arrested early Sunday after police were called to a nightclub dustup at 3 AM. Foster, safety Antonio Wardlow and fullback David Holbert were charged with disorderly conduct and underage consumption. Wardlow was also booked with public intoxication. All three players are 20. The incident occurred hours after the Vols crushing last-second 28-24 loss at the hands of LSU. This would mark the 13th, 14th, and 15th players in the Tennessee football program arrested since the beginning of 2005. But at least Vol nation can take heart that things aren't quite as bad as Alabama right now.

UPDATE: Three Tennessee players have been suspended following their arrests at a nightclub after the Vols' loss to LSU. Authorities said two of the players were fighting each other when they were confronted by the police. In a statement coach Fulmer says 'The three young men who were arrested let their teammates, coaches, administration and great fans down. Their behavior is an example of what happens when immature male ego mixes with alcohol and stupidity.'

HORSE PUT DOWN AT BREEDERS CUP... Pine Island was put down after suffering a severe leg injury after falling during the Breeders' Cup Distaff on Saturday. Jockey Javier Castellano lay motionless on the track for several minutes before being loaded into an ambulance - but Castellano was able to return and rode Bernardini to a second place finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic later on in the program. According to a track veterinarian Pine Island had to be euthanized due to a combination of the fracture being open as well as the instability of the injury. Pine Island was one of the favorites in the race, going off at 5-1.

BO THOUGHT HE WAS A GONER... Legendary Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler says he thought he would die while being rushed to the hospital after falling ill during a taping of a TV show a couple weeks back. Bo wound up having a defiblilator/pacemaker device implanted. Heart problems have been nothing new to Bo, he has undergone quadruple-bypass twice, and his first heart attack was on the eve of the 1970 Rose Bowl. He's gotten some mileage.

DID CRAZY EDDIE TAKE PAGE OUT OF TONYA PLAYBOOK??? Florida Panthers goaltender Alex Auld winds up going to the hospital in an ambulance after slipping and hitting a marble floor and splitting his eyebrow open. It is said that the accident happened after backup Eddie Belfour spilled water on the floor. Belfour claims that the spill was accidental, but a report out of Florida says that two witnesses claimed Belfour was unruly that night at the hotel bar, scuffled with teammates, bartenders and bouncers, before being hauled away from the scene. You may recall a memorable incident from a few years back when a drunken Belfour offered a BILLION dollars if police would drop a DUI charge against him.

SPORTSTALK HOST SACKED OVER TJ84 COMMENTS: Yet another one in the media business bites the dust. Andy Furman gets a pink slip from Cincinnati AM powerhouse WLW, the apparent result of unleashing a recent rant in which he referred to Bengals receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh as a racist. It is said that Furman had a stormy 18-year tenure at the station. It's said that the 56-year old Furman was suspended last month after he knocked Ocho Quatro in a rant that continued over two nights, criticizing TJ84 for failing to show up at a live weekly sports bar appearance he had been contracted to do for the season, Houshmandzadeh said that he thought he didn't have to show because it was the team's bye week. Furman referred to Houshmandzadeh as a racist, supposedly based on comments TJ84 had angrily made that week to the station's sales staff about Furman and the scheduling confusion. Houshmandzadeh has admitted he did say at one point to the station that Furman could f*** himself.

FORMER NORTHERN COLORADO BACK DEAD AT 25: Adam Matthews, a former star running back at Northern Colorado and the son of one-time NFL running back Bo Matthews, died at his home Thursday of an apparent seizure. Matthews was the second-leading rusher in school history, holding the record for most yards rushing in a season with 1,653 in 2003, including 279 in one game along with an NCAA record 11 consecutive 100-yard games. Matthews got tryouts with the St. Louis Rams and Houston Texans, and also played in NFL Europe. Matthews brother, Asa, is currently a junior linebacker for NCU.
