A bad week for Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson gets much worse after being witness to seeing his bodyguard shot to death in a bar in a trendy Clark Street neighborhood early Saturday. Willie Posey, 26, was shot once not long after an appearent fight broke out at the bar. The bullet entered through Posey's shoulder into his chest. Authorities interviewed Bears lineman Tank Johnson following the incident - a police spokesperson says it is the part of any investigation to interview all witnesses. There is no word on whether Johnson and/or Posey were involved in the fight, the murder weapon has not been recovered, and no arrests have been made. Meanwhile the Bears made final preparations for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Halas Hall with heavy security present. Tank Johnson had already been suspended by coach Lovie Smith for the game after he and Posey were arrested after a police raid of Johnson's residence found six guns on Thursday (obviously, developing...) ATTORNEY - TANK HAD NO ROLE IN SHOOTING: Bears nose tackle Tank Johnson, already facing weapons charges after a raid on his home, is not responsible for the deadly shooting of his friend inside a nightclub, the player's lawyer said Saturday. Johnson was cooperating with the investigation into Willie Posey's death on, but police have asked him not to discuss the shooting, according to an attorney who stated 'Tank Johnson has absolutely no responsibility for this tragic shooting. He lost a very close friend.' 2006 ARREST COUNT IN NFL UP TO 35: That includes eight Cincinnati Bengals, not to mention problems involving the league-leading San Diego Chargers which include Steve Foley's showdown with an off-duty cop and safety Terrence Kiel being arrested by DEA for transpoting drugs. That's 35 arrests out of league of 1800, or 2 percent in a 12-month period. You could well argue that's in line with any radom sampling of people in other professions. The real concern comes when one factors in repeat offenders such as Foley, Tank Johnson, and Chris Henry. And there have even been coaches who've found trouble, a Minnesota Vikings assistant being added to that list this week.![]() MASS BUCKEYE EXODUS??? Underclassman Ted Ginn, Anthony Gonzalez, Antonio Pittman,Kirk Barton file paperwork with the NFL. Pittman said several weeks ago he wanted to come back for his senior year and a run for the Heisman Trophy, but is now hedging, noting 'Like anyone else I have a family to take care of...' NOW MORA JR. PUTS HIS FOOT IN MOUTH: Maybe it might be a good idea for the Mora's to stay away from sportstalk radio for a while. The current Atlanta Falcons coach appears on a Seattle radio station, and is asked if he would ever be interested in the University of Washington job if it ever became available. Mora's response??? 'If that job's open, you'll find me at the friggin' head of the line, with my resume in hand, ready to take that job.' Later in the interview, Mora says he'd take the U-Dub job even if the Falcons were coming off a Super Bowl victory. Now Mora says was 'only kidding'. The way things are going in the A-T-L, Mora might have to settle for his own sportstalk radio job come next season. MAN HAS HEART ATTACK FOLLOWING FANTASY FOOTBALL TEAM??? 49 year-old Philadelphia man has coronary watching recent Indianapolis/New England Sunday night game which featured Peyton Manning and Joseph Addai, who were both on his team. Don't blame him, Dominic Rhodes still gets way too much playing time, dude ought to file a lawsuit against Dungy right now. Fantasy owner remained hospitalized until the following Friday, which is a big problem since his lineup has to be in by Thursday, league made an exception for him though. What kind of league is that - you ought to be able to make moves until 12:45 Eastern on Sunday. Guessing the man may have needed another stent inserted a few weeks later when Addai scored four times on his Eagles - that's how fantasy football works, if your guy does something it will be against your home team. Or in the case of Donald Driver a player from your home team delivers the dagger to your fantasy team on Monday night. Meanwhile, I'm sure ER's across the country are bracing for extra business on Christmas Weekend, also known as Week 16/Championship week.DEVIN HESTER ROLE TO EXPAND??? The Bears may be losing people on defense by the minute, but they have a few extra surprises planned for the playoffs - mainly using Devin Hester on offense, the league should step in and not allow that. Meanwhile check out the Youtube link with Hester's two Monday night returns - and notice Thayer muttering 'oh-oh' before Hester even gets to his own 20 on the second one. It was over, everyone was already left for dead. Meanwhile someone on the youtube page known as 'swaniegotgame' claims to be 'ten times better and ten times faster', adding 'wait until I get to the NFL'. His page has him as being 22 years old, but no other information. Come on Swan, tell us more, where are you playing college ball, I would like to direct the Packers personnel director to your talents. NFL NETWORK DISPUTE HITS PACKER, PURPLE NATION: Milwaukee-Journal Sentinel article hits on how some markets in Wisconsin such as Wausau (one hour from Lambeau Field) and Madison will not be able to get next Thursday's Vikings-Packers game. One general manager for a Wausau station vows 'It's going to get ugly' The article brings up the same tired talking points and mudslinging you've been hearing from the NFL and Time Warner/Comcast for months. However an accompying poll on the jsonline site proves interesting, 57 percent say they will gladly pay 70 extra cents per month for the channel. The cable companies argue that if they let the NFL Network in, then that opens the floodgates to ESPNU, CSTV, Speed Channel, Big Ten Network, etc - and next thing you know the bill's ten dollars higher and those who just have cable to hear Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck spout off nightly will be the ones raising hell. ANOTHER INTERESTING POLL, CHARGERS PROHIBITIVE FAVORITES: Again from jsonline, a market that does have some rooting interest in the Chicago Bears - a whopping 68 percent say the Chargers will win Super Bowl 41, the Saints come in a very distant second at 8.7 percent. Again, from a paper nowhere close to Mission Valley. Meanwhile you can check out my blog from earlier this week where I break down the NFL's eight divisional leaders, and you can knock down the Seahawks two more pegs since I wrote that.DUKE LACROSSE CASE TWIST: Yes, that is very much still in the news - even nine months after the case broke. Did I say nine months??? Word has come that the accuser in the case is about to give birth - if true, this thing is about to get VERY interesting, whoever could get proven as the daddy would either solve or crush the accuser's case. SMOKING GUN SPECIAL - MARCUS VICK HIT WITH $6.3 MILLION LAWSUIT: A 17-year-old girl who claims she had an almost two-year sexual relationship with Miami Dolphins rookie Marcus Vick has filed a lawsuit against him, accusing him of sexual battery upon a minor, fraud and other charges. The lawsuit states that the girl was a 15-year-old honor student at when she first had sex with Vick while he was a quarterback at Virginia Tech. If that were proven to be true, I imagine that would land Vick in significant criminal trouble as well. WHAT ELSE IS NEW?? RAIN IN SEATTLE: If you've heard about the 130 MPH winds on Mount Hood hampering the rescue efforts of three stranded hikers (Nancy Grace had it right - who scheduled that climb this time of year??), you know that wouldn't bode well for the Seahawks Thursday night game. Heavy rain pelted Qwest Field just before kickoff, leaving not only standing water on the field, but also formed 'bubbles' under the playing surface, causing officials to consider postponing the game. A power surge also briefly knocked out power to the large video screens at both ends of the stadium and to many of the electronic advertisements inside. And that's not all - heavy winds are due later in the night. This marks the fourth consecutive Seahawks home game that has been affected by rain or snow. VERNON DAVIS THROWS TEAMMATES UNDER THE BUS: Rookie tight end Vernon 'Thank God I didn't wind up in Green Bay' Davis throws blame on QB Alex Smith on throws during the 49ers home loss to the Packers, and also on WR Antonio Bryant for interfering with a route that resulted in a dropped pass. Those comments aren't sitting well in the 49ers organization, radio commentator Gary Plummer suggested during Thursday's broadcast that Vern focus on improving his own game before worrying about other players. Take that rook. ARE BEARS GOING INTO THE TANK??? Things are seemingly unraveling by the minute for the one-time NFC favorites - now defensive tackle Tank Johnson has again found the blotter after police raid his home in suburban Gurnee, Tank ends up being charged with six counts of firearm posession. While the police raid was occurring, Tank was being excused from practice and was driven away from Halas Hall by a Bears security official. Tank already has a gun charge stemming from a June 2005 incident and was also arrested after a nightclub altercation this past February - those charges were dropped. Coach Lovie Smith says that the defensive tackles playing status for Sunday is 'up in the air'.BENGAL PLAYER'S CAREER APPEARS DONE: Unfortunate news here, as doctors in Cincinnati have determined that second-year Bengals DE David Pollack will need surgery to fuse a cracked bone in his neck back together. Pollack was injured back in Week 2 trying to tackle Cleveland's Reuben Droughns. At the time, the exact nature of Pollack's injury was not disclosed but his head was placed in a halo brace, a clue that it was indeed a broken neck. It was hoped that the injury would heal without surgery. ARREST WARRANT FOR FORMER OLYMPIC BIATHLON CHAMP: An arrest warrant has been issued for 1994 Olympic biathlon champion Myriam Bedard, who is suspected of abducting her 11-year-old daughter from her biological father, according to Quebec City police. A police spokeswoman says the warrant alleges that Bedard abducted her daughter, contravening a custody order in place since October. Earlier this year, Bedard said her life was turned upside down following her testimony into a sponsorship scandal. In late March 2004, Bedard claimed that she had been told that an advertiser/sponsor known as GroupAction was involved in drug trafficking, that her partner had personally convinced the prime minister to keep Canada out of the war in Iraq, and that race car legend Jacques Villeneuve had been paid $12 million to wear a Canadian flag on his uniform. Villeneuve later denied that allegation, calling it ludicrous. MYRIAM'S FATHER EXPRESSES CONCERN: Myriam Bedard's father says he is worried about his daughter, the subject of a Canada-wide warrant on suspicion of abducting her daughter. Pierre Bedard says it is unlike his daughter not to be in regular touch, and that the former Olympic champion has always protected her 11-year-old daughter.CLARETT SENT TO 'CLOSE-SECURITY' PRISON: Former Ohio State football star Maurice Clarett has been transferred to a 'close-security' prison where he could spend the remainder of his sentence. Clarett will be in a single cell at the Toledo Correctional Institution, but he will not be isolated from other inmates, according to a spokeswoman. The facility only has single cells, and Clarett will be able to exercise and eat with other inmates. A judge sentenced the former Ohio State running back in September to at least 3 1/2 years in prison on charges of aggravated robbery and carrying a concealed weapon. ME-O BLAMES 'SNITCH'??? Can't you tell the Cowboys lost last week?? Terrell Owens disclosed that remains upset that 'someone within the organization' has been airing his dirty laundry - mainly stories about him being late to work and anohter article about him dozing off at meetings. Owens says he will confront the snitch 'when the time is right'. I'm guessing the snitch also wrote this story. THE 1 BILLION DOLLAR STADIUM: When opened in 1971, Texas Stadium was futuristic and ahead of it's time, one of the first NFL stadiums to offer luxury boxes plus the foresight not to be a multi-purpose stadium, unlike way too many stadiums of that era. Even today, the Dallas Cowboys current home does not look outdated - at least until seeing the renderings of the 'new Texas Stadium'. The trademark sunroof (which has always given the original it's uniqueness) remains, only this time it has a retractable cover, along with end zone panels that can be opened weather permitting. Oh, and there's also a 60-foot video board above the field, which I don't like. I worry too much about those boards in basketball/hockey arenas crashing down - but then again it could just be a crushing hit from Roy Williams. There's another rendering from the outside showing one enterence with a giant Miller beer logo and two giant beer bottles, so it sounds likes the advertising revenue is already coming into place (Dr. Pepper for the other entrance???). One other thing, it's said that the silverly glare of the stadium will be enough to make everyone squint. One billion dollars, at least you know it's going to blow Lambeau Field away. You can look at the complete renderings hereGORDON'S EXPECTING: After his mid-week November 7 wedding to model Ingrid Vandebosch, Jeff Gordon did not hide his hand - proclaiming that the new couple was planning to start a family, soon. Sounds like it was already a done deal even then - Gordon's website site announces today that the happy couple are expecting, with the due date in early July. Says Jeff, 'We're obviously very excited. Christmas came early for us this year. This is a very special gift for us – one that we're both looking forward to. Ingrid and I can't wait to be parents. We've known for a little while, but we couldn't wait any longer to share the good news with our friends and fans' Gordon announced his engagement back in June, the couple had been an item for some time before that. A bigger story down the road is that there are whispers that Gordon may retire from NASCAR sooner rather than later, as in perhaps the next 2-3 years. Meanwhile, things have been eerily quiet on the Tiger Woods/Elin Nordegren pregnancy front. |
